Hi there, I know this is my first post, It never occurred to me that there was a good GTI forum. And at my time of need I suddenly find it, typical.
The advice I need is what do you think is the value of a MKII 3dr 16V Gti, FVAG history and all MOT's from day one - documented 111k on the clock. My girlfriend and I are the 5th and 6th owner. Car is Metalic Black with only a few minor scrathes and 1 or 2 parking dents, the car has refurbed 15 Inch BBS alloys. Car is totally standard as VW built it. Interior is perfect, seats are totally intact, still got the little golf ball gear knob.
Mechanically the car is spot on having had everything replaced at some point. It drives like new, it really does.
My reason for this question is that after 2 and a half years of trouble free motoring someone decided to drive her mercedes into the back of it whilst we were stationary and I don't want the insurance company to write her off !!!! ... the boot lid is fine and still in the right place, however from above the exhaust to the VW badge is now squished including the boot floor as far as the spare wheel gap....

the exhaust used to only stick out and inch or so !!!!!!!!
Any feedback will be greatly received.

Pre accident condition, if the car is as good as you say. I would pay around £1500 myself.

even if they do right it off , it will only be cat A (or D?, i always get them the wrong way round)by the looks of it, so it won't be registered as a write off. If it is , just buy it back (at 10% of value) and get it sorted.
Gutted for you anyway, it looked a minter.

Good late mk2 16v's are always in demand. Just try and find another in as good condition, it may take you a while! 2k wouldn't be unreasonable, perhaps even more.

It'll be cat C write off as it'll be classed as uneconomic. cat D is an economic write off. If the repairs cost 60% of the value of the car you are heading to cat C and that smack is well on its way.

yeh, that's kinda my gutt feeling too .. it would be such as shame as the car was perfect, the woman who hit me was in her company car .. so she'll not personally feel it .. she'll just get her merc repaired .. where as I will get no where near what the car is worth from her insurance company and then will have to spend extra pennies to buy an equally good motor !! .. superb.
I've been searching for evidence of the cars potential value .. on paper they seem to be worth between 500 and 1000. I paid 3000 for it over 2 years ago however when I told the insurance company that value they just laughed and said it was worth a grand.
Oh well better start looking for a minty sportline ragtop .. always wanted one of those too.

which ever cat it is youll have to reregister the car with the DVLA it will need full mot and receipts for work done then taken to a testing centre plus you can only get 3rd party insurance on it from now on any full comp policies will be null and void because it was written off at some point went through this last year.
also if there offering only £1000 id fight it i was offered that for 1998 Vectra took few weeks of continuos calling but i got Almost double that.

at the end of the day it wasnt your fault, and if it wasnt for her you would still be in your 1500quid valver. Argue and argue untill they pay you that kinda money. or untill you come to an agreement.

rule to claiming never ever accept the first offer :D and if your insurance company wont budge then talk direct to the insurance company that is paying, they like to skim off the top of what they get for you, they call it admin charges but thats what you pay your premium for right?? and as sellers said you arent to blame why should you loose out

Cheers for the responses .. took the car to a mates spray shop, luckily he does work for insurance companies and is going to deal with the process for me.
He reckons i might get away with it as the integrity of the boot and shell haven't been affected. Only a slight ripple to the floor etc ...
So fingers crossed .. still waiting for the blumming claim number though !!!! .. will let you know the outcome ..

Just an update if anyone is interested .. My Golf is being repaired on August 8th .. turns out that a 1991 MKII 16v is worth between 2000 and 2500 ... The assessor valued it at 2 without knowing it had FVAG etc ..
Do really chuffed .. having a new front bumper fitted whilst she's in ... hurrah
