if its the same thing ive got, ive been told its an anti roll bar bush that needs replacing, sounds kinda like something bouncing/ rattling round in the boot is the only way i can describe it

2 common suspension failure points on the mk4 golfs, the front antiroll bar bushes wear/perish through time and can clank/rattle/bang a bit, mine where, they were replaced with genuine vw bushes and new clamps, the back end can also suffer rattles and poor snatchy handling, this is cause by the rear axle bushes which were from the factory oil filled (on early mk4's) over time these perish, the oil weeps and handling gets sloppy and noises can be heard etc, i got mine replaced with genuine vw replacements (upgrades which are a hard solid rubber bush), this has got rid of rattles on my car and handling is now better, get em checked out mate!!
i got mine done, £60 ish for front bushes to be fitted etc, and £120 for the rear bushes to be fitted, which is an arse of a job as the whole rear axle needs dropping off to have them pressed in/out etc, got mine done by LOUTH VW (see good guys section..)
