I've been looking at getting one of these.
I know that the Dremmel has a good rep. But as I won't be using it everyday I'm struggling to justify the price tag.
I've seen a Rotocraft one at Halfrauds and a Challenge Extreme one in Argos. Both are very cheap, but seem to have ok reviews.
Has anyone got one of these or any other recommendations?
Is it just false economy to buy anything other than a Dremmel?
Cheers
Sean

Rotocraft, Challenge Extreme, Rolson & some thing from Lidl. I've had all four. Lidl's one was best but still doesn't match the Dremmel.
BUT they are still light tools. What are you looking to do with it?
-
Ah. Forgot about Lidl. Have seen them in there before.
I'm not undertaking major work, just thought it would be a handy tool to have for little cutting jobs and for hard to reach places for sanding/grinding/polishing etc.

B&Q do a decent range 'dremmel' type tools.. i used to own a kit and several attachments when i used to keep a reef ( fish tank) for cutting corals.. and they were always found to be up to the job ( some corals have skeletons to give some metal a run for there money
and hones,t im poor as they come so value for money was a must :)

Thx Shelagh. Might have a look around b&q tomorrow.

Don't buy a cheap one on a wim, a dremmel is good because it doesn't struggle as much under load like the cheaper ones do.

i bought one from woolworths years ago and still going strong but i use it now and again and also no use to you as woolworts aint around no more but just a price tag with the dremmel i think mate

 Wooly's is no more  No more pick 'n' Mix!
I might have a looky at the Rotocraft one as I believe you can use Dremmel bits with it (?) I am struggling to justify a dremmel on account I will probably only use it a few times a year.

I got the Dremel 300 for £30 in B&Q as reduced from £50. Have a look in there to see what offers they have.

Dremmel all day over a wilkos special, dont waste your money
I have a pneumatic pencil grinder and a compressor which has awesome torque
"Dremmeling" just takes longer and works the motor harder, cheap ones die easy if really put to task

I bought this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rotary-Multi-Tool-Kit-Engraver-Polisher-135W-Hobby-Drill-42-Accs-Fit-Dremel-/390404498410?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item5ae5ebe3ea) a few months ago to port my throttle body (with these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HSS-ROUTER-CUTTER-KIT-6pce-FITS-DREMEL-ECT-/320556486345?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item4aa2a7cec9#ht_768wt_905) cutters) and it's held up well, powerful, easy to use and comes with a fair few accessories to get you going.

I have the Skil 1415 rotary tool and it's fantastic. It's got great reviews on the internet, when compared to a Dremel and I've never found it struggles at all. I've even used it to cut an exhaust up which worked great. Went through it like butter!

For porting:
These (larger sizes available)
http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/scripts/details.php?cat=Burr%20Kits&product=30621
Followed by something like this (mine are better but cant find kit on the net)
http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-engine-and-mechanical-tools/porting-kit.html
Then a good buff with some mops and rouge
Finish is everything
Mounted points clog and HSS Burrs blunt and burn out, to run carbide you need a good strong spindle with low run out.
If you want to get anal, this is what you should be checking for when buying kit like this although this does reflect in the price.
For anything rough like air boxes you can get away with something cheap and the in box tools

Not a bad bit of kit, we got one at work somewhere

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I may go "shopping" tomorrow and have a mooch about.
Just seen this though http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/power-tools/hobby-&-multi-tools/Ryobi-150W-Rotary-Tool-12127641 (http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/power-tools/hobby-&-multi-tools/Ryobi-150W-Rotary-Tool-12127641). Seems pretty good for the price.
VW BUSH, I wont be doing anything like porting. My mechanical skills really don't stretch that far. My tool box consists of:
This for making things go:

This for making things stop:

And when all else fails................

i get on quite well with these.
find electric ones are to bulky to get where i want to get with them. tho the cheep ones can be viewed as a consumable tool i tend to kill the bearings but there again doing heads put a lot of side load on them that proably woun't be a problem but i prefer pencil grinder over 1/4 grinder due to easyer accses and running them at 140 PSI its actuay faster at removeing metal

I can just see it now.
Wife: "Thought you went out for a Dremmel? What the f&*K is that?"
Me: "It's..........errr.........It's an air compressor sweetheart!"

I got a dremmel for my birthday many moons ago in a nice limited wooden box I love it and it only was about £70 odd
The bushes are still good after my abuse with about twenty cutting discs. These days I've learnt to use angle grinders with diamond discs they last so much longer

With Danny on that one, at my dads place we have an old pencil grinder which goes straight on the air feed and runs at about 25k rpm for roughing out
Then the NSK impulse on page 45 is then broken out for finishing with Abracap/Abradisc (19 to 21)
Rate Abracaps, these were the bits I could not find in one of my earlier posts

Still a bit hard to get away with a compressor in the kitchen although a small one is about the same footprint as 4 pairs of shoes

Well after much deliberation I have gone a bought a Ryobi. 150W, variable rpm (10K - 30K). Came with a bench clamp and flex shaft plus 115 accessories. And the collet size is industry standard so can use attachments of pretty much any make. All for the bargain price of £43 (15% discount at B&Q). Similar spec Dremmel was £110. Very happy bunny
Thanks to everyone for their advice. I was hugely appreciated.
