Title: which underseal to use and what colour?
Post by: jakehill307 on 07 April 2012, 22:23
so started work on rust under the car today, revealed all the rust, used angle grinder with wire wheel where possible and wire brush everywhre else, then painted hammerite rust prevention over the exposed metal. can see this below

Now for the underseal, what do you guys reccomend? ive been told to go with Dinitrol in aerosol form. Thoughts?

Also any ideas on the colour of the current underseal? want to get the right colour to spray over the new underseal which will probably be black so it all matches.

first project and new to this so be gentle if ive got/done anything wrong haha

ALSO as you might be able to see from the photo the current underseal is rather thick, from my knowledge spray on underseal doesnt form this thick, any ideas on what has been used here?

I would use a PU based seam sealer applied directly to the body, via a caulking gun. then using a cheap 2 inch paintbrush to bush it in. If you look under your car, you'll see areas that have been done in this way from the factory, the secret to make it look like OE, is to not stipple the sealer, but brush it with one stroke... leave it to dry for half a day, then give it a light coat of primer, followed by a light  coat of body colour, blending it in to match the original, if thats the look that your after that is?
Finish the underneath with a clear based Waxoyl, VWs own product is very good, and can be bought from the dealer for about £12 per ltr, and gives a great OE look...

Is the stuff from vw today the same as what they used in 1991? I've also got to get mine redone this year, its still great underneath this is just added peace of mind and prevention, ideally I want something thick and tar like to set under mine. Not bothered on weight, its just as the car is low and the underside brushes more the thicker the better imo. When I picked the 10mm thick stuff off a donor shells under arch area, jesus was that stuff tough thick and horrible to peel off, but damn it was brand new underneath!!
