Okay so my Driver still isn't going. Exactly the same as before. Fine under idle, runs like complete sh!t under load (Jumping/spluttering/failing in general until it stalls). I've changed and checked so much now and still nothing. Starting again for some fresh ideas and hopefully an answer..
What I've done;
- Spark plugs
- HT leads
- Dizzy cap + rotor
- Fuel pump + filter
- Earths cleaned/reterminted
- Air filter cleaned
- Starter motor
- Carb cleaned + adjusted + serviced
- Inlet manifold rubber gasket
- Looked for arching/sparking in the dark
- Runs like sh!t in all temperatures/humidities etc. so unlikely to be icing
- Timing
Anyone?
-
Do a compression test.
Check the timing's not 180degrees out.
-
Timing checked with a light and seems to be fine. I've got no idea how to do a compression test if I'm honest. Definitely something I'd have to pay to have done.
-
Buy a compression tester for £15 online, or £25 from Halfords.
Remove a sparkplug and wind it in, then turn the engine over with the king lead removed. Test all four cylinders and let us know the results. They should be within 10psi of each other and should be around 140-160psi or thereabouts.

Will this do?

Edit: Ordered. I'll let you know how I get on.

Okay thanks. Probably wont get this till at least Thursday next week at the earliest. I'll have to come back and let you know.
If anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear 'em. Getting seriously fed up with this now.

I can take it into work and prove its accuracy if necessary. What's worse case scenario if one or more cylinders show bad compression? I really can't be doing without a car for any longer with new work commitments.
-
Medium case is head gasket has gone, so head off, skim and back on with a new gasket and bolts.
Worst case is you find it's gone before and the head's already had a skim or two and is junk.

If I'm brutally honest I've run out of time and patience now. The money isn't a problem it's just that I need something that I trust and this car just doesn't do that any more.
I'm thinking of putting it up in classifieds, someone might want it for a project even though it doesn't have much going for it. I refuse to scrap it though.

If I can find some local storage with good access so that I can work on it when I want, I would.. But the chances of that are slim.

You say you've replaced dizzy cap and rotor arm etc (things in my experience never cure a prob) but have you checked cam to crank timing as previously stated? Go back to basics and check this first, then if you have a timing gun check the ignition timing, including advancing. Prove a good spark on all plugs. If these check out check compression on all cylinders, has the carb been fully checked over for leaks and function etc? Spray carb cleaner at suspect gaskets on/around carb when running to see if affects revs. If timing, spark, advance and compression are ok then it kind of must be a carb/ fuelling issue, and if you don't know how to set a carb engine up you may have to take it to someone who can. Don't get too stressed because it takes longer to sell a broken car for nothing than it does to think methodically and find the problem that is right in front of you. A good carb tuner can transform a cars performance to differ night and day, trust me I've been there with the 1.3 pierburg pile o sh!te
-
Sprayed carb cleaner around. No change in revs. Spark on all four cylinders timing gun shows it's okay and that was the last chance I had to work on it. I have a compression tester coming this week so I can check that when it arrives.
Like I've said, money isn't a problem. Original plan was for it to last until my first years no claims then SORN it as a project car. New job means I need a new car right away. In the process of finding a garage to hire local to me to keep it and work there on my days off.
-
Cool well keep plugging away at it, and if all fails don't waste too much time or money, chuck an abf in it.
-
That was always the dream ha. Seems like a lot of work for a car that I wouldn't even be able to insure. Think I've found some suitable accommodation for it as well. I'm a mech engineer by trade so I'm sure I can get it going.

crank woodruff key worn? so its moving when under load and screwing the timing, just a thought.
