Title: Dipstick / funnel broken off
Post by: CitizenKane on 06 April 2012, 19:54
Hi all,

First post, so apologies if this is in the wrong section or anything (but I do drive a mk4 so I thought it would be a good bet...)

Basically my oil light came on so went to the garage to check it. Pulled out the dipstick, wiped it off, tried to put it back in and it wouldn't fit, it only went about half way down, as if there was something blocking it going fully in. I spent about 10 minutes trying to wriggle it around to see if I could get it in but to no avail. Eventually, probably due to the incessant wriggling, the top of the 'funnel' part that the dipstick goes into (if that's the right word for it), snapped off. So there is now no dipstick. The oil tube is now exposed but there is no oil leaking.

My question is:

1. Has anyone experienced this before and if so was it easy/cheap enough to get sorted?

2. Should I be ok driving around for a few days by just covering the exposed hold with some duct tape or something to make sure that no debris gets in?

Cheers in advance.

can get a new tube for about a fiver and yes its common as it heats up and cools down and gets brittle, just be careful none falls down tube while pulling it off
