Title: Car Buying Help
Post by: jimbooboo on 05 April 2012, 12:48
Ive seen a car I like, its 1.8t 54 reg audi A4

its in good nick and 103k miles and just had lots of work done:
new starter motor
new dual mass clutch and flywheel
new cylinder head gasket and full head
new timing belt
new oil pump etc

Now should I be worried about any of the above, im thinking mainly about the cylinder head??

The dealer said he sold it last year and within a month the customer had lots of issues so he gave them their money back and fixed the car and is now back on sale...

Thoughts?

Unless you know the mechanic who did the work I would walk away tbh! A lot of independent dealers have a habit of doing the absolute minimum to get a car fixed and back on the road!

What's your gut instinct telling you?

I dont know mate, rang him up and he sounded genuine. Need to view the car first before i can make an judgement.

How can I tell if what he says has been replaced? Without taking his car apart lol...

That's the problem mate, you won't be able to tell without having a proper look around and inspecting the workshop receipts. Take it for a good long test run to see how it feels. I would also have a mate follow behind to see if its blowing smoke considering its had a new head!

My uncle is really handy with cars, used to be a dealer in his day importing etc.

Guess ill let him take a look before I do anything.

I would avoid it all costs, if it had so many problems that they had to give the guy his money back it would worry me about the standard of repairs they have done to resell it on.

They may have cut corners.

He is a car salesman and they should never be trusted, they are in business to sell cars so the more they move the better no matter what problems they have.

I would be very cautious, walk away unless it's at a rock bottom price.

I wouldn't say it was rock bottom but it's not bad either. I will be very cautious about it. Maybe the head went for some dumb reason an it took a few parts with it????

It's a really nice motor. I thought it was a good all the stuff had been done until I read about the head and gasket lol.

I would imagine it's the fact that he sold it and had to buy it back. He's out of pocket and therefore may have cut corners on the repairs.
Tbh looking at it wouldn't cost anything other than a bit of your time. You're under no obligation to buy, and it gives you a comparable for others you may look at.
I'd take a mate though for a second opinion and go with your instinct. At the end of the day it's a second hand car and as we all know - a second hand car comes with second hand problems. It's just that some problems are bigger and more expensive to fix than others!
