Guys... I NEED to put a shallow sump on my engine ( 1.8 20v turbo ) whats involved with doing this
Thanks
-
Speak to Brad (kells) as he has looked into this, they are available but you run less oil which has mixed views on a turbo engine.
-
i wouldnt run one as said the engines contain that amount of oil for a reason, if i was going to run one ide be doing oil services every 4-5k atleast
involved its just a case of buying the new sump and replacing, ide replace the pick up pipe while you have sump off.
some mk4s (think its only 2 out of the 3 mk4 engine codes but could be wrong) have a sensor on the sump i belive?
-
Raise the engine Insted?...
-
get stance+?
-
had mine strengthened and its since been tested (numerous times) and for the people who didn't think the mod would work, it has stood up to the abuse fine
was looking to make my own sump that will be approx 1" shallow but will still have the oil level sensor and also still hold full oil as per OEM
its a WIP at the mo tho
Raising engine not possible, not in my MK3 or in the MK1 we did

what did you do to yours on my 3rd sump now in the mk4
-
yeah ide be interested into how you streingthend it?
quite tempted at getting a sump guard or buying the ones you can get with the bottom made out of steel or what ever metal it is you can get which is suposed to be harder
-
its in my thread someplace mate
in a nutshell, had it plated up with 5mm steel.. had got major scuffs now tho, but still in 1 piece

will show my mate that 2mrw  guess whos doing mine

Raising the engine isent possible aha just need a shallower sump to give more clearence.. Just wanted to know if its a straight swap
-
Run the short sump with a remote oil cooler, this will give most of the lost capacity back, and also take better care of the oil..

I fitted a steel bottomed shallow sump on wednesday last week. As I smashed my second one!

Oops
I got this one as I don't have a oil level sensor in the bottom. If you do then get the simular kit from PSI tuning as that has the fitting for the sensor. Also Awesome have free postage at the momment. http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=27518 (http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=27518)
Its a nice kit and comes with everything you need, Apart from new sump bolts. (Mine wern't that old)
Picture of it fitted to mine.

Easy enough to do myself. Interestingly it still took about 4 + 1/4 L of Oil so not that much less.
No problems as of yet. Very pleased, nice to know that its a little bit safer and only got about 30/40quid more than a sump from TPS. Well worth it i recon.

will put it out their that the non genuine sumps will smash to bits by just looking at them
Genuine ones can take a beating...

various ways round the issue, advantages and disadvantages of them all.
duffing a thick ass plate on the bottom of the std sump is the cheep solution and to be fair it works done loads of them at work but it can come back and bite you in the arse. it will wear through again at some point or as happend with the company tit about / dyno b!tch car. you duff the sump really well and snap an engine mount bracket off.
fitting a shallow sump reduces oil capacity that in itself is not a problem but its less oil above the pickup so lower cornering G's will leave the pickup high and dry so adding some baffels is a good idea. as said oil cooler helps but if its going to get the large doses of pedal an accusump is a very good idea.
fandango sumps are another option, at one point we had a batch of really tough shallow winged sumps cast for the 1.8t for both inline and transverse application but in the end we decided against useing them and specked drysumps instead where needed.
drysumps the proper solution, most expensive of the options above but worth the money offer advantage of been abel to do away with te chain driven oil pump so engine or car can go lower still offer some performance gains and remove oil suge completly. cost 2 k for a cheep kit tho
-
or a INA strengthened sump from the US of A
Expensive but won't break, it will just bend. it is same same size as oem item too
-
Well this is my out come.. Bought a shallow sump from awsome gti and AIR
