I know this is probably not the correct place to ask this question and probably a stupid question...but here goes.
If I wanted to buy Vag com system, so I could change my own stuff...where could I get one and what all do I need...and is it as easy as all that.....and would it work with a apple laptop....

Email sales at vagcom dot biz and he will do you a good price, better than any other sites. He's a mate and he supplies genuine VCDS cables, sold a lot on the various Audi forums.
It's easy but won't work natively with a Mac. However, you could probably do some fancy virtualisation to get it working. Whatever Apple call it these days. I'm not an Apple user so cannot say anymore than that

Thanks Scotta

No it only works on a Windows system. You should be able to pickup a cheap Windows laptop.
If you read the Distributors list (http://www.ross-tech.com/distributors.html) there are 4 places you an buy either VCDS or Micro-CAN for your car. Now when I enqiured with these distrubutors in 2010 when I asked my works to buy one only Ilexa (http://www.ilexa.co.uk/acatalog/vagcom.html) would give a small College discount all the others said they are only allowed to sell them at list price. I bought mine from Ilexa and I paid £264.14 in 2010 for my VCDS.

Just stick a copy of Windows XP on some free virtual machine software (Virtual Box for example) and then you can run it fine on Mac.
That's what I do for VCDS, ETKA and Revo's SPS software
