Title: 8.5 and 9.5 x 18 on a Mk4
Post by: SSTDI on 04 April 2012, 18:44
Probably been covered a load of times but i am new to the site and want to know if its going to be usable as an every day car for the missus running kids around and carrying shopping without arches rubbing on the tyres. I want to put 8.5 x 18 with an ET of 40 on the front with 15mm adapters and 225 40's, the same on the back but 9.5's with an et of 37.
I am planning on dropping it 35mm with just springs not a coilover kit as i was warned off cheap coilovers and don't want to spend a fortune on it as its just a diesel runabout for the wife. Luckily I have the choice of another pair of 8.5's for the rear if the 9.5's wont go.

Its been a while since i messed about with golfs , last time it was mk1's and 2's back in the days of raves and acid ... happy days
Any advice will be appreciated.

With all due respect if it is just a run around for the wife then why bother with all the hassle, you will only get rewarded with kurbed alloys!

i agree with scarr and its upto you as its your well its your wifes car   but wheels that wide need to have some serious lows to pull them off or they just look silly imo

That it will...do you have pictures of the alloys in question

I should think it would fit, I believe 10J wheels have been fitted to the rear on a mk4 so 9.5 should be fine, tight, but fine. You may well get some scrubbing on the rear if going over speed bumps/lumpy roads fast as if you just throw some lowering springs it won't make the up and down motion, if you get me, too much slower I'd imagine.

Thats the info i was after ,would this be the case with 8.5's on the back too.
I would love to put up a photo but dont know how, !!  As I said earlier I am an old rave refugee we dont know that sort of stuff.
If some one else can, be my guests . They are Merc SLR looking rims(the five spoke ones) i think they came as an option on early 2000-2009 SL's . I am sure proper SLR's had stupid big rims.

mine rubs like a beesh on the back and catches now and again on the front with 8j wheels all round but my coils are all the way down and tbh you probably would need front arches rolled depending on how low your going to go oh and 15mm spacer on rear and 5mm on front

Pretty much the sickest wheels ever IMO. I have a friend running them on his LCR on air, such a unique look!

Got to get them on now, they look quality on the mk4's and 5's.  I thought they would look pretty good, that has just confirmed it.
Where is the best place ( cheap )to get uprated gas shocks to go with the springs i have.

For a everyday / usable car run 8x18 with 225/40/18's all round (et35) these with a 40mm drop is a spot on setup.

Nothing like a bit of tyre stretch but its up to you! I'd probably go for 205 :lipsrsealed:

what is it exactly that gets rolled, the arches are rolled from factory? or are you referring to the arch liner?
Title: Re: 8.5 and 9.5 x 18 on a Mk4
Post by: nolandubholmes on 06 April 2012, 20:01
I've got an arch roller and will do anyone in the lancashire / blackpool area all four for 40 pounds it does make a difference cully I've rolled loads and u can get upto another 5-12mm extra clearance  it makes a big difference obviously it's always best to remove the arch liners and underseal then then chuck liners in the bin !!
Title: Re: 8.5 and 9.5 x 18 on a Mk4
Post by: cullygti on 07 April 2012, 00:19
its the arches that get rolled on the inside to stop rub when you use spacers to stop tyre rubbing i HAVE NOT had my arches rolled and you do not need to ditch arch liners if you get them rolled unless you are on air ride in which case you would just cut out the top of the liner to stop rub on top of tyre etc
Title: Re: 8.5 and 9.5 x 18 on a Mk4
Post by: nolandubholmes on 07 April 2012, 17:17
it also slightly flairs them very slighlty allowing more room for wheel width and such i know as does a company down south call arch enemy who remove your arch liners then they underseal them allowing even more room im on 19s with arch liners in and they constantly touch im a mech with an arch roller ive rolled loads of cars from audis to mazdas mx5s to all sorts of random jap / vw slammed vehicles and if possible removing of the arch liners is always best u dont need to be on air ride at all
Title: Re: 8.5 and 9.5 x 18 on a Mk4
Post by: cullygti on 07 April 2012, 17:28
i didnt say you had to be on air ride i said if you are on air ride to stop arch liner rubbing only on the top width of the tyre of course or catching you would have to cut out the top of the liner as cutting it all out looks sh!t.. as when the car is lowered really low on air it would rub the top of the liner on the top of the tire  if that makes sense im sure if you go on ed38 there is no end of threads about arch liners as there are a lot of ppl on there running air ride

Golf is all done!! Got it dropped 40mm and put the staggered rims on with 225 40's. It passed the acid test with a car full of kids with all the football gear and had no rubbing at all. I now wish i had dropped it a bit more but that might have been pushing my luck.

Yeah, your right,it does need to be slammed.
Gotta keep it practical though as an every day run around, thats why she has it but it beats running about in a stock one.
I have to have at least one practical car !! might as well make it look nice

Cheers , it will do for now, but the fact that it doesn't rub or catch anywhere did make me wish i had dropped it a bit more . That might have been pushing my luck. The front especially looks high but Milton Keynes(where we live) is the land of the speed ramp too which doesn't help. I have some in my street that the Alpina cant get over without being right up on the pavement!!!

Otherwise they would have to make two different wheels
