Well after rebuilding my house two weeks to get most of it done
Two major issues left
Main roof beams are rotting whole roof needs lifting off :lipsrsealed:
A little subsidence on the left of the house :lipsrsealed:
Anyways back to what I found under the 11foot well.
I looked, disconected and brought into the garage for a closer inspection!
Any generator specialists out there?
Is it worth saving will rebuild the dam thing and have it on my shelf of other shiny bits?

I put it around 1969 circa :undecided:
Briggs and stratton are still around
Markon are still around
Gardiner Marshalls are gone :lipsrsealed:

0272 was the old area code. Its 0117 now, it changed when I was like 12, so like 18 years ago or around thereabouts anyway.
-
The engine itself is older the electrics have been retro fitted by the looks of it hard to tell its got electric starter so may be later 70-79 possibly?
-
It don't look like it would work :undecided:

yeah of little faith
and i guess never owned a mk1 or 2

That looks to me, to be relatively modern Jay, early 90s i'd say...
Clue would be in the Bristol dialing code, Briggs and Stratton made very good machines of that type... until Honda took over!

it's quite old. has a dyna start system on it by the look of things (works as a dynamo used to charge a battery, but also used as a starter motor )
theyve been useing internal genorators for meany years now and dedicated starter motors, often inertia type but on heavy duity units pre engadged can oftn be found.
the exposed tip of the plug also puts it as been quite old, its s short to stop engine. meanaing you push the metal tab ontot the plug to sort it out and stop it, thats not been allowed for meany years now ( as they can give you a bloody big shock )
engne says it's rated at 8 hp but only 3 kva so thats a bit pants.
you'll need to trefresh the wireing on the genorator side but no reason why the genorator itelf won't work.
as for the engine, that vintage had contact point behind the flywheel they hardl ever wear out but will looking at the general state of the rest of it need a good clean and resetting ( good luck getting flywheel off ) carb will need striping and cleaning.
shove some oil down the plug and see if it'll turn, then if it has compresssion.
as a genorator id say not worth it you can buy honda knock offs for not a lot of money for light duites, but a hevy duity horisontal cranck station engine is usefull for meany things, alolways looking for those with more than 3hp

the volts are not what they say on i either its now 240 or 110 volts cool find

To reuse this pointless as stated I could buy a honda for £250 with more power!
I wanted to see if I could get it going for the fun factor!
The issues are thast all bolts are imperial I have some sockets but smaller ones are a nightmare in stripping esp with rust.
Parts are four companies electrics are Marshall, starter delco remy, engine is Briggs and dynamo is Markon!
starter can be refurbed as can the dynamo engine if I need pistons and conrods even carb parts thats going to be expensive to import!
I'll ring around see what I can uprate like the electrics, hopefully it can be used to power the fish tanks pumps in a power cut
The whole thing was defo built about 1970-1980 as the previous owner of the house has documents stating there was a generator in 1980.
Thats as far as history goes on it.

A FULL nut and bolt rebuild is required, parts shoudn't be too difficult Jay, plenty of B&S Lawnmower service agents out there, so stop with the excuses, and get it sorted

LOL I will rebuild it!
I'll be right on to the blower first thing on Monday and even get chrome bits for it
I could make a go kart out of the engine NOW THATS A THOUGHT.......

surprised you found somewhere to put it in your garage :lipsrsealed:

Why use an old engine that will need rebuilding and parts are probably hard to find when you can pay £100 for a GX160 engine which is using in many 4 stroke classes and it's got plenty of parts available?

Think its already been covered.

gx160's arn't all that for a mucking about kart. old B&S engines like that are king for off road karts as are the OLD hondas they deliver there power in a completly diffrent way to the new ones.
the old side valve engines will pull hard from few hundred rpm. the newer high compression low displacement OHV engines are more efficent but have bugger all torque compared.

Since this is becoming a go kart engine topic, whats a good cheap engine for 20bhp?
