My wifi signal is really poor upstairs in the bedrooms furthest away from my bt home hub.
Is there a decent gadget out there to get over this?

its the dogs! plug and play and actually provides a wifi signal so strong that its better than the virgin router plugged in downstairs. the beauty of it is you can add adittional plugs exactly where you require them e.g. tv then hardwire it

Which hub do you have?

you need a wifi signal repeater or a baking tray.

If you're able to relocate the router upstairs, that will help greatly. Not just because thats where you are having the problem with your signal but you *should* still get decent enough signal downstairs and could well be the cheapest option. Having your wifi router upstairs on the 1st floor of a 2 or three floor house is always the best option. It may entail using a telephone extender cable and drilling a hole(s).

New BT home hub.

My BT homebub is located in my office. The office is an extension built on the back of the garage (see pic). The BT homehub needs to be located in the office as this is where it is connected to my desktop PC within an ethernet cable.
My laptop connects to the BT homehub wifi o.k. in the house downstairs. However upstairs there is no signal (the house has solid and thick walls).
I like the idea of the Devlo system which networks through the mains suppply of the house. However my offce is off a seperate fuse board to the house so I guess this wouldn't work.

Any more ideas other than running an ethernet cable from the office to my upstairs bedroom (as I hate cables running up front of the house)......?

I run 2 seperate boards in my house and it still works.... albeit with slight loss in speed, but still works well

I'm surprised, the homehub 3 has fantastic wireless performance! I used to be able to get full VDSL internet speeds from the attic of a 3 story house. I'm not sure what they're like for WDS (Wireless Distribution System), but that may be an option. It works by taking a wireless signal and repeating it, rather than taking a wired signal. They can be a bit hit and miss on compatibility though.
See if you know anyone local that could borrow you some powerline adaptors to test might be your best bet. Or buy them from somewhere you would be able to easily return them, if they don't work!
If you're with BT, it may even be worth considering BT Vision! When I got it, I received a pair of powerline adaptors with the Vision box for free. The newer versions of adaptors they give out now are awesome too! It'd work out £48 for the 12 month contract.

Getting the BT infinity broadband installed this Friday. As the master socket is in my dinning room, I guess I will have to relocate the homehub in the house anyway from the outside office. Then I will just have run an ethernet cable from the dining room to the office so I can run my desktop pc.
At least with the hub in the house it gives me the option of running the Devlo system to network through the mains suppply of the house if the signal is still poor upstairs.

The router has to be plugged into a vsdl faceplate on the master socket, you can get them to make which ever socket you want into the master OR they should run a data extension kit off the master face plate to where YOU want the router, dont let them tell you otherwise

Thanks for that. I’m going to work from home tomorrow then so I can politely tell the BT engineer where to stick it.

You could put the router in the house and put a wireless card\usb adaptor into your PC.

Thanks guys for your help...
Had the Infinity broadband fitted today. Decided to have the homehub installed in the outside office again.
In the house with the Wifi connected to my laptop I'm getting 4-5 bars downstairs. Upstairs I'm getting 1-3 bars. So I think I will just buy a Wifi extender just to give the signal a boost upstairs.
Maybe this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-WN3000RP-Universal-Range-Extender/dp/B004YD30QK/ref=sr_1_7?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1333115132&sr=1-7
Or this one which is a lot cheaper

Or these

Amazing latency! But BT's network is great for that. Your upload is suspiciously low though.. I'd consider raising that with BT in a week or two if it doesn't improve at all. While your upload won't always be directly proportional to your download, I'd expect to see it much higher than that what with your 37mb down!

I've got the Edimax one and its great. I can easily get my 37/8mb VDSL speeds through it and it's been really reliable.

Poblem solved. My IT guys from work installed me one of these in the end which I'm using as a repeater.
http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/ap800.html
Now I get 5 bars wifi up stairs no problem
Only downside is the download speed is a bit comprimised when using the laptop upstairs. i.e.
Desktop pc connected to infinity via ethermet = 38mbs
Laptop connected to wifi Homehub3 = 20mbs
Laptop connected to wifi Homehub3 then Draytek repeater = 8mbs (so thats a 30mbs drop which is a shame)
However all works well so no complaints. My IT guys have email Draytek to ask the question is this drop in download speed normal or is there a setting that needs to be changed etc.
