Title: Steering Wheel Vibration
Post by: Gav16vgti on 29 May 2005, 21:59
Hi ya all new to this site got myself a 1989 16v and having problems when driving mainly on motorway above 60mph the steering wheel vibrates quite badly but sometimes is worse than other times irrelavent of the speed. When i hold the steering wheel tightly to stop the vibration you can feel it through the car.

I have had the wheels balanced several times, and changed them from front to back but it is still happening

Any ideas people

If you have tried all that whith the wheels have a look at the break discs and CV joints next.

Have you have the tracking and camber done at the same time as the balancing?  Also check whether there is any play in your top mounts as this was causing a little bit of judder at speed in mine (in conjunction with lots of other worn bits!).

id go with that too check the tracking and camber aswell as balancing on all the tyres not just the front if there ok top mounts  and engine mounts,

if the discs are warn or warped it only effect you under braking not make the steering wobble in regular driving its normally heart wrenching moment where the car actually moves left or right not just wobbles well was for me i was doing 90 in a merc minibus :S.

the other is at the rear if you remove the inlet pipe you should be able to see it and the 3rd is under the gearbox if you replace them use VW ones only.

forgot to say push the block back and forward with your hand make sure its cold first if it moves the mounts have had it but to test them properly you need another person to sit in the car with it running and lift the clutch up as far as you can without stalling or moving (dont stand infront of the car my dad made that mistake) the block will move ideally you want little movement if the front mount has gone the engine will move about 3/4inchs up and youll see the mount compress about 2 inchs the other way it should be solid.
