Title: supercharging my 8v gti
Post by: andynorfolk on 26 March 2012, 18:46
how easy is it to essentially turn my engine into a g60? it's a pb digi

or can i get hold of a bolt on charger kit, if so how much work is required?

i was thinking about a 1.8t conversion but i'd rather have something a little different :)

cause then surely i'll have a real problem with compression won't i?

am i right in think it's much easier and safer to fit a supercharger kit than turboing a non turbo engine?

By the way your idea for 1,8T is not bad, but not for replacing the engine, why you don`t use the setup, turbo and other bits and use them.

He meant the 1.8Turbo 20v from the MK4, not a turbo'd 1.8 8v or 16v MK2 engine

Go for a 1.8t conversion, much easier in the long run.

as easy as buying a corrado g60 and using that engine, charger and loom imho!

As above, buy a G60 engine if you want to do it.

Yes, bolting a supercharger on is easier to get right than a turbo installation, allowing you to get away with running low boost pressures if you use a supercharger without any internal mods and resorting to an intercooler (mainly due to the much lower intake temperatures than when using a turbo). You can also pretty much get away with a re-map (replacement chip) to deal with the fueling but its not exactly the easiest/cheapest job in the world if you cant design and install all of the kit to do it yourself and cant find anyone to write you a custom chip/modify the ignition timing. Add in the unknown factor of your current engines overall health and it makes much more sense to just drop a G60 engine in thats designed for forced induction from the start with lower compression and uprated components to suit. Add in the fact you can get a fair bit more oomph out of a G60 engine than they come with from stock (admittedly at a cost in terms of overall and especially charger reliability) quite easily and its a bit of a no-brainer. Still not cheap though  .

the only other factor is that my current engine was only rebuilt 10k ago and was bored out at the time so seems a waste to drop another engine in and then get nowhere near what i paid for this engine back

That may be the case but to run boost your going to need to drop the compression.

Don't go thinking that the PB and the PG engines aren't terribly different, just because they're 1.8 litres and have 8 valves.

Similar they ain't.
