Title: Mk2 owner now a Mk3 owner
Post by: wellfan on 29 May 2005, 19:57
Please bare with me, I have owned Mk2 Gti's for many years. I have now bought a Mk3 Driver (1994 model) on ebay. I did not actually buy this vehicle, however, to spare you a long story, it is now mine. I am now actually looking forward to owning this car. However, I am not sure what the spec. of this car is. Could someone please advise me where to find the spec details so I am aware of what to look for when collecting the car.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am wondering what spec. it should have, like power steering, etc.

I have just realised it will also have a catalytic converter, are these problematic and how expensive to replace?

Cats are normally very reliable, so you shouldn't need to worry, unless it has done excessive mileage?
The driver is 1.8 mpi with 90bhp i think

I've got one and have had it since march 1998 when it had 32,000 miles on it.  Now with 117,000 it doesn't seem to have deteriorated much at all.  The Driver is a 1.8 SPI single OHC 90 BHP with a computer for timing adjustment etc, but still has a distributer and rotor arm.  They are simple enough and for that reason there is little to go wrong which is its strong point.  It can be a little slow from start off, but on a motorway it will eat up the miles with little effort.  Just don't except hi performance.  Its not slow, its just adequate.

There isn't much to look out for on these that is specific to the car, refer to the section at the top for what to look out for on a MK3 should cover it.  Specifically, all that has gone wrong with mine is a set of rear shocks, a new starter motor and rear wheel bearings.  You may find the engine mounts are bit worn.  2 are easy to change, the engine rear side it a nightmare.  Underseal may be showing signs of age, check local to body / engine sub frame and at the very least pull the under seal off if it has bubbled, it'll be full of water.

You'll have to put up with manual windows, but sunroof is electric.  Alloy wheels may be pitted and need constant blowing up, get them recond if so.  The interior I believe is the same as in a GTI MK3, well the seats are but no rear head rests.  It'll have smoked lights, boot spoiler, red stripe on front and rear bumper (not colour coded bumpers).  White indicators at the front.  I think there is also a 1.6 Driver available, but having had a MK2 1.6, I know they must be slow as all hell.  Central locking will also close the electric window if you keep the key turned.

Just had a front pipe put on mine, cat was inspected visually and was said to be fine.

Thanks for all replies. Hope to collect it this weekend. Mine seems to have body coloured bumpers and a roof mounted aerial, don't think these items were standard fit. Are the alloys 14" or 15" and what size tyres should be fitted as standard? Just want to make sure I am getting a standard 1.8 driver, if the spec. is not as it should be, I'll have a few questions for the seller who made no mention of any modifications. What about price, I paid £470 for it?  Here is the link to the ebay page. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4551962706&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

Seems a pretty good price - you can be safe in the knowledge that if it drives like a dog - you could easily get your money back at an auction, even if it is scruffy.

Looks like someone has sprayed the bumpers - drivers were not colour coded until 95'96 when all models became colour coded.

On looking at the ad again - does seem like a good price and its a nice colour

Looks like everything is OK spec wise.  The bumpers have been sprayed to GTI spec, but they seem to have left the red strpe on as the Driver would have it.  The wheels look to be standard Driver 4 bolt and should have 185 60 14 tyres on.  Bit unusual for it to have roof arial, check wing for bad patch up where arial should be on drivers side.  For the price you have payed you can't go wrong, if you can make it into a minter you could get near £1000 if you were to sell it on again.  It will have power steering by the way.
