Title: Cold starting Problem driving my insane
Post by: marcogolfo on 29 May 2005, 18:40
Mk2 16Valve Kjet
ok i've started a new topic because this doing my head in and im not getting anywhere with it.  I have a cold start problem that seems to be getting worse.  At first it was just an intermittent problem but now its all the time.  If I leave the car for a few hours she wont start.
The basic problem is that you can hear her turning over on the key but there's nothing.  After five minutes of turning her over you get a slight firing noise as if she is going to start.  Then eventually she will fire up and cut out immediately.  After a further five minutes of turning her over she will eventually fire and keep running.  The revs at idle will then start hunting up to 1600 rpm and finally stabilise around 1000 rpm.  After that she is fine and will start after one turn until i leave her for a few hours then i'm back to square one.  I have replaced ht leads, fuel filter, looked in the dizzy and it looks brand new, cleaned up various connections pissed about with the coil, checked voltage on battery and its at 12.98 or something and all sorts but still no joy.  Can anyone help as its driving me insane, its embarassing when you have to open your bonnet every morning. :(  Please please help thx

not en expert on 16v's but i had the same with my old 16v and turned out to be the cold start valve.

I used to dissconect the ISV hose and wires and it used to fire up straight away for some reason :undecided:

ok disconnected the cold start valve today and it didnt make a sh!te bit of difference.  What i did notice though was that there was white wispy smoke coming from the left hand side of the block as i was turning the engine over but it wasnt firin.  Also noticed that on the inside of the ht leads that go to the plugs there was a small amount of oil.  Could this have anything to do with the problem?
cheers for help i want to get to the bottom of this

try cleaning up all the electrical connections and sensors on the side of the head.  Bit of emery paper and wd40 might help also check all earths, clean them up and a bit of petroleum jelly. Clean up contacts on the coil,  try another battery? just suggestions

welp i reckon mine is definitely fuel related becaus ei have to keep my foot flat on the floor in the morning to get the fuel out and she keeps cuttiong out once started.  After about 8 starts with my foot flat on the accelerator she finally starts and keeps running.  Anyone any ideas?  Please its getting desperate now

Have you checked the o2 sensor?  Had problems with a Subaru running very rough when cold, wouldn't start etc, turned out the Lambda probe was knackered and the mixture was all wrong.  Maybe nothing, but worth a try! :undecided:

Does the main pump prime when you turn the key?  Is the lift pump working too?

Check the single lead on the temp sender on the back of the head this can sometimes cause starting probs.
Also have you checked the injectors to see what the spray pattern is like also wether they are leaking at the nozzle .
Have had similar problems on other VAG cars with K-Jet system.
If they are left over night or over a few hours fuel leaks out of the injectors into the cylinders making them a right sod to start due to excessive fuel  You can try unplugging the cold start injector to see if it makes a difference (less fuel) but ultimately you may find that new injectors will sort it . :undecided:

Hope this helps
