Title: mk4 woes
Post by: phatsam2003 on 22 March 2012, 22:54
Hi guys,

Surprisingly I've been having probs with my 150 Turbo

First off I've got a nice film of fresh oil in my throttle body and Oil dripping slightly from the bottom pipe coming off the intercooler. Also the last couple of days when boosting to around 1 bar the car hesitates multiple times. I fitted a catch can, deleted the intake oil breather pipe and cleaned out the intercooler last August

I'm thinking Turbo oil seals?

I fitted a catch can, deleted the intake oil breather pipe and cleaned out the intercooler last August, also......
The cars been remapped amongst other things and is on 192000 miles if that helps?

Anyone have any idea if my thinking is correct or could it be something else?

Cheers for any input

Sam

hard to say if the hesitation is down to the seals but they could be the cause of your oily intake circuit. Doesn't seem too bad yet if its just a small drip from the cooler.. but to be fair 192k is good innings for any turbo standard or mapped!

agreed 192k that turbo must be getting out of puff by now time for a ko4

Cheers for the replies

I was thinking it's lasted pretty well considering! I've got a ko3s sitting around so will prob slap that on next month  I'd love to go down the ko4 route but just can't spend the money on all the extra bits at the mo.

Any idea's what the hesitation could be? just a rough idea where to start looking.....

as far as hesitation get it on vag com or a scanner thats half decent possible airflow meter ?? dont quote me on that ive done a few golfs now no engine check light on but several codes ??

If you have oil dripping from your intercooler pipe then It must be leaking therefore causing a boost leak so try sort that first.

if theres enough oil to leak then id say the turbos had it, at that mileage its done well!

I like your thinking!! I'll get it on vag com asap and see if its throwing anything up.

I've also made a boost leak detector at work today, just need to let the sealant dry then ill give that a go.

I'm pretty sure the turbo's shagged as well so I'll be looking at replacing that asap.

Whats confusing me with the whole thing is it only hesitates at 1bar. If I drive without pushing it to 1bar it's fine, as soon as I give it some beans and it hits 1bar it hesitates until i back off. It's making me think the turbo's the main culprit! But I'll still get it on vag com and check for boost leaks just to make sure.

Cheers again for the replies people

you could have a split in a pipe that stays relatively closed but opens up at a bar of pressure

Good thinking Topher  if it is it should show up on a pressure test
