Title: Do you need to inform your insurance company if?

You replace parts like for like, for example put a replacement engine in, the same engine code?

no not like for like. otherwise youd have to phone up everytime you changed a bulb or your break pads etc

Churchill say that if a new engine is fitted, like for like, it has either be done by a qualified mechanic, or inspected by one.
Evidence in writing is required.
Surely this is ridiculous?

It seems a little over the top yes but if that is what they want, you'll have to do it, unless you cancel and go elsewhere..

  I have just fitted a boot spoiler to my Vento do I have to tell the Insurers and would I risk paying out more if I do ?

you do yes, not sure on price going up. looking in to insurance and mod cars some companies wanna know if you have put stickers on your car :-/

I work for a well known modified car specialist broker, yes, anything non std must be informed to the insurer, even stickers or silver indicator bulbs ! Most insurers will charge more or an admin charge for informing them, we don't charge any extra for non power mods and we don't charge an admin fee to inform us !
