Post by: devilscaff on 21 March 2012, 15:58
only had it three weeks done lots of bit to her after changing my gearbox oil yesterday decided to take to work.Having a bit of fun when a huge cloud of smoke came from the rear and temperature light came on. Pulled over and there was no water in the engine and radiator pipe had burst. Put as much water asposible to get it half mile to safty but was smoking  like a b!tch is  it head gasket gone?

Had the pipe ruptured due to extreme pressure by the look of it. Or was the water loss just down to a split because of its age?

Fit a new pipe and fill it back up and run.  Then you'll see where the leaks are.

Depends what colour the smoke was. He's gonna say something like that, he wants your money! Is your oil filler cap creamy?

Water leaking through a knackered sender............
As suggested on here mate, sort all your water leaks out before panicking about headgaskets. What colour was the smoke? As said, it could have been steam, but that could have been from the water splashing on the block and exhaust, but obviously with you travelling, you only saw it at the back. Only real way to confirm its not HG is a compression test, but don't flap yet!

Get some hydrocarbon tester strips fill up with water stick strip into the expansion tank check what colour if headgasket is gone there will be hydrocarbon's in the water i.e water!
Second opinion as its a costly job!

This.
Compression test doesn't always show headgasket failure.

There are full KR lumps flying about on ebay for £250 a pop all the time, really simple swap. May be worth taking the head off though just to quickly see whats what. If your pistons are sill round and show no signs of scratching the barrel it would be worth grabbing a new head and giving that a go.
