its under the bonnet, happens when driving not idiling and just noticed when i went for milk that it dont happen when clutch is dipped..
cant really describe the noise but its like a diesel :/
any ideas?
-
When I first read the title I thought you were referring to something that had slipped out of your "private collection"
-
hahahaha!!
i can assure you that theres nothing in my 'private collection' that sounds like a diesel
-
lmao
-
sounds like a misfire. It is worse when > idle?
-
I have the same - its the thrust bearing on mines.
-
have changed the plugs today.. its a bit better overall but the vibration wont stop :( gonna take it in on monday and see what it is..seriously annoying me.. sounds lovely when idling

Like WadGTI its coming form the gearbox.
-
Seriously not having much luck with this one are you Shelagh.
-
If it totally goes when you dis-engage the clutch, its most likely the gearbox main-shaft or counter-shaft end bearings if it sounds like that.
To be honest, if its suddenly gone and gone that bad, i would suspect there is an underlying problem such as an oil leak etc..
Unlikely to be the thrust bearing, that will be quiet when the clutch is not depressed and worse when it is depressed, due to it being under pressure in contact with the diaphragm springs, common misconception, or people refusing to believe their gearbox is nackerd
I would advise you to change or at least check the gearbox oil, remove the upper filler plug and fill it until it pours out, if it took more than half a litre its almost certainly lost oil causing the issue. If the level is ok, Run the engine in netueral and rev it, listen down close to the gearbox for rumbling/clicking noises, that will pretty much confirm it.
Could possibly be a faulty clutch plate falling apart, but very unlikely.
This is based on the info you have given so far so could be other things too but more info would be needed to go down any other route at this stage.

right.., yes its leaking oil.. yet the boys havent told me ;)
was under it today and saw it over the front axle
noise is coming from gearbox direction!! )( thankyou god who ever asked that) feel like im going fecking demented.. no one can hear it! mine does NOT sound like a GTI!!
have tried on/off clutch.. its all good.. when revs hit 2000 its rumbling :/

havent had much luck with any of my golfs sean.. all taken the piss... yet to find the one that gets the better tho ;)
do think i should have replace the engine rather than do the head on this one

Well as you drive the car a lot, you will notice it during the "onset period of bearing failure" As we diagnostic techs call it  so there is probably just a bit of pitting on the bearings at the moment, they will soon grind down and get worse, the first step is to add oil, that is vital if you plan to use the car until its fixed! Sometimes if you have very good hearing and catch it very very early, you can get it to last a fair few thousand miles, but its putting off the inevitable.
Unfortunately, everything does point to being the gearbox bearings, adding oil may quieting it, it may last for many miles, or it may fail tomorrow, fact is, you cant tell, and it will only get worse.
So, options are, overhaul or a second hand box, I personally overhaul boxes regularly, so to me, its the only option, second hand boxes (specially knowing how bad golf boxes are) could be much worse than the one you have (or had) I would replace the main bearings and oil seals and any rough needle rollers on the gears, i always do a full inspection of everything else i should hope any one else would also.
If you can find a box with a guarantee... do that. Unless you don't mind paying out good money.

pitting was an advisory of the MOT....yet he cant her it when i took it .. seriously i can hear it!
he did the MOT he advised so why the fek didnt he know it was that.. fecking eeedjit!
thanks so much mate ill get that sorted
-
That was likely pitting of the brake discs, i was referring to pitting of the bearing bearings (inside the box) which is what causes the initial roughness of the bearings, not something you can see without stripping the box.
-
gear changes.. everything is smooth.is a noise that started after the head was done.. its something loose??
i drive and it sounds like a diesel.. no effort to change gear.. or anything else
i dont se where your based so i can pop round
-
He is in Mid Cornwall, bit far from the Island of Barry!
They shouldnt have undone anything to do with the gearbox when they did the headwork, but maybe worth checking all the bolts etc.
-
ahh bit far then lol
finally got around to getting someone to look at it, they should be here ( 2 mechs that both own mk'3's) this evening
fingers crossed that its nothing major
-
This sounds more like a problem with the exhaust manifold, if it happens at higher revs it may be that the manifold wasn't bolted back on properly or some of the studs have been cross threaded allowing the manifold to move when the gas starts moving through a bit.
-
1 problem found the heat guard/cover was loose so rattling when rev'd so clamped that.
still vibrating tho.. havent given up yet
-
still think it's the exhaust manifold...

I've had this before, made my heart sink

ok, can you tell me why you think that, where the thing is and what could be possiby wrong with it (( might save me several notes if i least look like i knw what im talking about))
so step by step please lol x
yes stow i was very excited when i rev'd and no noise.. till it moved :(

No, i'm wrong if its totally normal when revved at standstill then it can't be the manifold, my thought process was based on it sounding 'like a diesel' and having had head work done recently.
i've heard cracked/damaged and badly/wrongly fitted exhaust manifolds and they can be very quiet at tickover because its not under so much pressure but will sound like an old tractor when revved whereas a sick gearbox will usually whine and be difficult to use so to be clattering like a diesel it would have to be on its last legs.
I know you've said it sounds like its coming from the gearbox but it can be deceptive if you can only hear it from the driving seat.
-
my gearbox whines, but its a definate whine and sounds like its from the gearbox.
-
ah i see :(
well thanks for taking the time to explain anyway.. im tempted to put it down to 'just a noise that it makes' but thats not good enough
ok, gonna go and see 3 diff garages tomorrow and see what the common opinion is.. then of course bug you again for a cheap fix
im adament thats its really there and im not imagining it :nerd:
forgot to say that when it was up on the ramps ( shes amazinly clean underneath!) the 'oil leak' that i sa was deffo the mess laft behind after the head was done... so infact its not leaking oil at all
would the cat being loose cause it to vibrate?
-
If the cat has broken up inside it could cause rattling and extra noise when its revved.
-
right what i need is a link to somewhere where i can view the whole engine ( named parts) :embarassed:
pretty please
-
If you look in the mk3 maintenance section there are lots of threads and pictures of the various nether regions of the mk3.
-
have spent hours looking through that.. cant find what im after...although its very very good!
ill pop and get a haynes tomorrow..i left my last one in the boot of the old golf
-
mine is starting to blow from exhaust manifold an have a rattle all so which i have found out it coming from the heat guard/cover round the down pipe as the weld have come a way. does not sound nice at all.
-
very easy to clamp andy .. though i guess you know... i did find this

i was going to do this but found one on ebay for cheap an does not rattle so just going to get change. hope u get yours sorted.
-
Yes the cat will rattle if its broken up, easiest thing to do get under the car and give the exhaust a shake (when its not hot of course) if its broken up you will here it, or start the car put your head under the drivers foot well and use your hand to rev it on the peddle, you should be able to hear it like that too...
just seen your new signature, nice colour and your missing the same centre cap as me
Good luck
-
at the risk of sounding like a complete knob here... just went for bread and the noise seems to have gone.. tho the car hasnt really been nywhere for 3 days so its hardly had a chance to warm up.. left it idling when i went into the shop and the only thing i did notice while driving back was the exhaust rattling from the back ....either i have the luck of the irish or somethings fallen off

To be fair it might have been a heat shield, I mentioned before I had a loose one and I just left it, until one day it stopped rattling, the shield is still there...I think
Have you checked your Cat??
Does the car drive ok?
-
then i think you were right.. i havent checked/touched anything not likely to either while its going so well lol
car drives perfectly well .. the heat sheild was clamped on saturday but something was still vibrating... ah well ( lol)
-
The baffles in my middle box are rattling, sounds just like what your describing although mine only happens at about 1100-1300 rpm.
-
been out again... no noise still
little rattle at the back as if a bracket loose or something...will get one of the boys under it tommorow to check ( its on a street/weekday and i dont want to get run over :lipsrsealed: )
weight off my mind i can tell you!!
-
Heatshields? Get rid!
Other exhaust rattles? well most common is the exhaust hitting the mid way carrier or what ever its called, cured by new rubber hangers.
-
Also check the exhaust is not catching the rear beam.

All possible reasons, If I was you, have a butchers under the car, rattle the cat even grab the tail pipe and give it a wiggle see if anything hits...other than that if the car drives ok I wouldn't worry about it...

exactly what i was thinking..
gonna do as stow says today and give it a wiggle see what plays.
thanks wayne :)
im sure it dont sound like an expensive job if that makes sense.. one happy bunny here :)
will post back later and tell what it is x
-
its the whole heat shield.. found 2 bolts missing ( could be more).. got new ones only to find they are too big.. but the bolts are rusted to hell anyway and i cant see how to replace them, cant even see how to rip the bloody thing off
tea break over lets see if i can work this trolley jack
-
Shelagh - do NOT work under a car supported by a jack alone. You need it on axles stands before you get under!

tut tut
My heat shields are going in the bin, the next time I have to take the exhaust apart (v.soon)
-
thanks Len
i have axle stands ( rather my son does) but i gave up anyway as i live on a busy street with no garage access.. didnt take me long to work out i couldnt get to the middle of the car from this side
-
I still think you should look over and behind the engine in "that" position I mentioned.

I was only explaining how to do it without ummm errr causing harm to certain sensitive parts!
-
you fail to mention the ring spanner Len
only kidding! but i bet an fiver that stow went through the thread to find out what you were referring too
