Looking at VW's website, Cruise control is a dealer-fit option costing £180 on a Golf mk6 .
I rang Listers VW Nuneaton today and they said my car needs an additional control module bringing the cost upto nearly £600... Can this be true? Surely false advertising?
2012 model year, GTD.

Not sure about the MK6, but as an ex VW service manager, I can tell you that's how it was on the early MK5's.
Up until MY07 you need to replace the control module under the steering cowling and ren the wire from the stalk down to the control unit. After that year, all the cars came with the later ECU and pre-wired.
I've been gone from VW for a while now, but this still maybe the case for your model. I'm sure some of the technical guys on here will be able to confirm this for you.
When I bought my MK5 MY09, the dealer fit price was £180.00, but I just bought the stalk at £44.00 and fitted it myself...real easy, if all the wiring is in place.
Congrats on the car by the way...the MK6 is so much more complete IMHO!

These guys did my 2011 MY for £300 after my dealer said they couldn't do it: http://www.vwcruise.com/

My dealer is charging me the £188 fora 2012 GTD. It is being done now. Steve (Mr GtD) had his done for £188 from his main dealers. It a standard, advertise charge.
-
Just checked the web site and it says cruise control fitted for £188. I presume that means working.
On the web site there is no mension of additional costs for extra bits for GTD owners.
I'd ring back Listers and ask for the manager and ask him why they are not charging the advertise price. Or VW customer services to complain. Let us know how you get on.

+1 what Cliff said...

beware...pikies in Nuneaton!

Literally 5 minutes ago, i've just had the £188 quote, although mine is a 2010 build.

I spoke to the dealer, both Service then Parts. Firstly they said the £188 is a factory fit price, I told them it's a dealer fit price. Then they said my car needs a new steering module and the fully fitted price is £566. I've now been on hold to VW Customer services for around 10 minutes. They've so far said that £188 is a recommended price only and that is something between the dealer and me. I said there are at least two people I'm aware of who have 2012 GTD's with dealer fitted cruise at a cost of £188. I was then told they can only comment on my individual case!?
The person then said I should read the small print in the T&C's on their website and as the dealer has explained the reason for the increase then there's nothing that can be done. She said the prices are subject to change without notice!
Now it's been escalated to a 'case manager' and I'm expected to be fobbed off by them in the next 48hrs!
The plot thickens :nerd:

Oh dear....this just stinks of another way VW will try and get more £££ out of people....
How can this be right, surely the price quoted on the web is the price you pay regardless of age of vehicle if not then this shud be stated on the web....which it clearly isn't!
Grrrrrrr!!!

Can you not just try another vw dealer

Always the best way to get the best price....

For the people who are having it fitted as part of the deal of buying a car I can guarantee the sales dept will be swallowing the extra cost it will have set them back to have it fitted.......I quoted a customer back in sept 2010 when he bought his car and took delivery in December 2010 we then found out we couldn't fit it and we only managed to fit it a few weeks ago once they released the new retro kit and although we invoiced it to the customer at £180 ish it cost us well over £500!
You will get no where, some cars they can fit it for £188. However we are waiting for new accessory catalogues with up to date fitted prices.........

Yes, very true... Worth shopping around. Unfortunately Listers have the monopoly within 50 miles, and I'm sure they'd all get the history when they type my reg in... Will find the nearest non-Lister dealer and give them a bell...
Yes, it makes sense that the £180 fits my have been subsidised by sales... Oh well, worth a try I suppose.
-
Did you buy the car from that dealer you enquired about the price of cruise control, pm me you reg number and I will get a price from my parts manager tomorrow.

Thanks, I'll pm it to you.
I got it from a dealer in Newton Abbot, who were great and considerably cheaper than the Listers boys locally... Well worth the 300 mile round trip to collect!

I ordered mine without cruise and then changed my mind before delivery. Mine was fitted for £188 but it did have to have a module fitted. Thanks SG Smiths for absorbing the cost and doing the right thing. E. G. Sticking to VW's advertised price....

Boys n girls, sorry to bring a downer to this thread......
...I had cruise fitted as an optional but have hardly used it. In fact, the only time which I do use it is on the M1 near Luton, 50mph for 10-odd miles and even then I have to flick it on and off due to other drivers.
I suggest that you only go for the additional outlay if you know you will use it on a regular basis, to make the most out of your hard earned pennies

You're not wrong... we do go to France quite a bit where it is pretty handy to have, but I can easily live without it. I think one thing that irritates me is that my wife's just had a new Seat Ibiza 1.4 with cruise control as standard... Along with folding mirrors and voice control Bluetooth, and yet it cost less than half what the Golf did ;-)
Btw, I did ring another dealer, Solihull VW, who said cruise can not currently be retrofitted due to a technical issue on post 2010 Golfs. He said there was a fix in place, although it was awaiting approval from Germany....
The truth is out there somewhere ;-)
-
I haven't used cruise yet but most of my driving is town, I bought it cus it's something I've never had on a car before and also if and when I do stroll onto the motorway it's there if I want it....yes I cud of done without it but I don't think it's money wasted, if I thort that I wudnt of bought it....besides I like my cars to have as much kit as poss
-
It can be done technically as mine has just had it fitted.
I travel on motorways a lot and do use it. It is great as you can speed up to over take and the relax your foot and it goes back to the set speed. It especially good through road works with average speed checks. The MK6 golf system works well and is simple to use. The computer display works very well showing the speed you have set it and info about if it on or off. It's very relaxing on long journey at night which we do to avoid the traffic, hence the xenons and cruise on my car. It is only worth it if you will use it which I do and does depend on the sort of driving you do and where. You can't use it on the M25 because of the traffic!
I agree it should be standard on a GT spec car!
However, my wife refuses to use it and says she does not like Gertrude (her pet name for the GTD) taking over!

It is standard on the Golf GT, it should be standard on the GTD and GTI?

Hi...
I too have been after having cruise control fitted to my May 11 Golf GTD.
Ive been into VW Hull many times since I got the the car In May 11.
My car was built post March 11 and have been told the the modules changed but VW didn't inform anyone.
VW have been working on a fix and did release some parts but have since recalled them as its not working as it should.

Mine is 2012 car and had to have an extra module (what ever that is) fitted. This works fine but perhaps not on a 2011 car? Who knows.....
