Title: Dilemma! Gypsies, Dogs, Neighbours and moral fibre!
Post by: Roverdose on 20 March 2012, 15:46
Right, my missus is a traveller of roma decent, we live in a nice little house on a small estate as do her sister and mother 2 doors up, we share a neighbour, very nice couple who recently had twins. my missus's sister has a husky in the back garden, absolutly stinks and is living in squalid conditions, its even chewed through the fence into our neighbours garden. Animal abuse gets my goat. baaaaaaah. do i...

a: report imediatly to rspca
b: demand the dog be handed over to me
c: give her an ultimatum with 2 weeks to get rid or i'll report her
d: keep my big fat nose out

Is the dog new? Or has it been living like this for a while?  Bare in mind its a Husky, and what's needed to look after the breed.

I know it's family, but I would take some discreet pictures of its condition, surroundings and then "have a word".

No disrespect, but they may simply not know how to keep a dog, and need some lessons.  Especially for a Husky.

Failing that - and if they tell you to mind your own business -  then RSPCA all the way.  That's when the pictures come in, as they'll will have evidence to immediately remove the dog.

I own 2 English Springer Spaniels.

Tough one! Dpn't want to upset the family, but need the best for the animal.

Have you gauged what your other half thinks of how it is being kept? If it's her sister she may have better inroads than yourself and that way you get to stay out of the drama?

these dogs are very very hard work to keep being locked up with send it insane.. quite literally.
you have a moral duty to report the matter.. no one need know where the complaint came from  and as for the damage caused.. they have a duty to repair it/ cough up funding to enable you to do so.
at the end of the day even tho pack animals.. this dog cant look after itself and while its not the same thing.. im sure youd be on the case if there was a friend of yours who's kid was constantly shabby in a dirty nappy  :undecided:..if you could take care of him/her then why not offer to take it off there hands.. do your research first though.. the dog will possibly need retraining.
does the dog make a lot of noise whilst hes outside? if so maybe a call to the council to complain would start the ball rolling
im not naive enough to think that every dog in the world brings the same excitement when they get older as they did when they were cute and fluffy.. but it in no way deserves this :(
and not everyone is an animal lover.. for some chucking a few scraps is perfectly ok,,,while others would spend silly money on salmon and the best.. NO dont look at me!! lol
c'mon make a difference.. make the dog smile ;)

Other half thinks the same as me, not worried about the family their certainly not going to be a problem. I've said to her time and again, but it's rare that i ever see the dog. I did'nt realise how bad it was! She never walks it and doesn't particularly care either!

No she's had it nearly a year. gorgeous animal and really good natured. I'd have it myself but i know it's too much effort with work, kids, car etc.

Definitely report it and also gather as much evidence as you can photos, videos, log of what's gone on etc if at all possible. The RSPCA need evidence that the dog doesn't have adequate access to food, water, shelter etc to do anything. Unfortunately they can only seriously act if the basic laws surrounding care are broken (e.g. physical abuse, no water etc) rather than if the dog isn't kept in what most people would consider acceptable conditions.

What they can do is visit and try and educate them or maybe get them to sign the dog over voluntarily.

If you don't get anywhere maybe the dog could 'chew through the fence' and 'escape'.

Post by: shelaghmk3gti on 20 March 2012, 18:44
together i think me and kitty assume the dog has no food readily available??
gypsies are well known for immaculate morals ..( of course there are exceptions) i think this is a simple case of not understanding rather than lack of due care.. cant belive my whole family are in my lounge talking about this...
take youre time. think..i mean about you taking it on not about reporting it.. gotta be done love..they are not highly desirable dogs with bad habits.. so be cautious xxx

My MRS is a "PIKEY" as you so elequintly put it, which means that in your eyes my children are "PIKEY"? Maybe i should send them back to their wheeled rabbit hutches eh? This isn't a gypsy bashing thread, Keep your opinions to your self and STFU.

I told her she had a 2 weeks to sort it out, got quite stressy with her. She had her new boyfreind there with her and all. Hope she's feeling suitably ashamed! I'll give her a reminder next wednesday and if nothings done i'll call the rspca, even if they just give her a warning it'll give her the kick up the arse so she knows how serious it is!

If you don't want an opinion don't ask for one on a forum and then complain when someone says something you don't like and don't shift the emphasis on to your kids, I didn't mention them .

So why mention that she is a gypsie? Why not just say his sister in law instead of saying that she is a Romany gypsie and all the controversy that comes with that.
I'll leave it now seeing as I've been told to STFU and called a 'dick'ed' .

...I would imagine the description was to give you the full picture of the dilemma as Gypsie families are very tight knit so it's not an easy decision to shop in one of your own.
