i recently bought a mk3 golf gti 2.0 8 v R reg. When i lifted up the bonnet the engine looked weird like if half of it was missing or something, i bought it anyway as it looked nice and it was cheap. But know im wondering if this is really a gti, it says so on the logbook but theres nothing on the engine to say it is a GTI 8 v, how do i find out if this is a fake please help me. thanks
-
The 8v isn't really a GTi so don't worry.
-
Isnt a GTI??? change the record mate you're getting boring.
We 8 valve owners love our cars give it a rest eh.
VR6 > :-X
-
Andy, Dont worry mate it doesnt say anything on my R Reg's engine either. I cant see anyone faking an 8 valve but you never know!
Fingers crossed eh but it sounds to me like u gotta bargain there!
-
To Glen :-* :-*
-
Engine code on the log book should start with AGG
and yes the 8v engine does look like half of it is missing - well compared to the 16v
if it has 5stud wheels & rear disks then its a gti at least, all lower models had 4 stud
-
Right with all of this NOT a GTI stuff , i am off to form a GOLF GL forum, then a f**k the lot of you ... anyone coming ?
:P
-
Nah B*llocks to that VR6 can go and form his own forum. The I love the sound of my own voice forum, no other members allowed only him where he can :-* his own ass!
Anyway if you're being a purist VR6 then yours aint a GTI theres a GTI badge on mine but I dont see one on yours bloody good car granted but no cigar my son, I think that deserves one of your :-*'s VR6!!
Come ON!!!!
-
How you doing with your mods Glen? :D
-
Not bad just trying to figure out how to shoehorn a Dodge Viper engine into me engine bay, it might work if i saw it in half. :-\
-
I've got an R Reg 8v.
I dont think its a proper GTI. 10secs+ to 60. top at 125. Just for info i believe the new 94bph Ford KA does 0-60 quicker.... :'(
The golf is like a waterbed round corners. rough sounding engine.expensive insurance for bugger all extra performance. ???
Nice car, just TOO DAMN SLOWwwzzzz.
-
Where you been Pimpster? i've missed your honestjohn hate mail ;)
-
I've been as busy as an HJ moderator editing every single post that i dont like.
Busy, bluddy busy due to bird making us buy a new house!.
Anyway mate, the Golf is probably up for sale again due to cash flow, so expect a new sales post soon.
I'm thinking more like ?4500 for a 97/R 8v minter with AC. 67k miles. Not sure tho. any suggestions?
-
Keep the car mate, i know what ya mean, its hard work going near the car ;)
-
I do need to change for costs sake, but i'm now thinking i'm getting a little bored and fancy something a bit faster and newer - hence one of the new diesel things.
MK3 golfs are ok but getting a little aged in looks now so it might have to be a Mk4 and goodbye mk3 :'(
-
Pimpster I wouldnt put it for sale on here after the glowing recomendations you just listed above! Bugger all performance, Ford Ka goes quicker, like a waterbed round the corners, getting old and looks its age, engine sounds rough, expensive insurance,
ROLL UP, ROLL UP! FORM AN ORDERLY QUEUE ONLY?4,500 OF YOUR ENGLISH POUNDS!!
Youre not a salesman by any chance are you Pimpster?? ;D
-
well its funny you should say that.....!!
I will of course try and sell it on here, but there are numerous other places that could be possible. ;)
Stuff the dynamics, feel the quality.... ;D
-
8)
-
bung it on ebay, thats got to be worth a chuckle.
-
Got a few things going on at mo to commit to a full sale, but will update over the next few weeks.
Never used EBAY b4. worried i might a) get stung b) get no offers c) pay too much to EBAY or d) get wind up votes who have no intention of buying/
answers on a postcard....

I believe there were two states of tune for the 8v
one at 90bhp the other at 115 bhp (roughly) for the P and R reg cars - don't know why.
Probably still a PB engine though.
Big car small engine - deal with it.
-
I understood that they were always 115bhp from launch.
feels like 11.5 to me... ;)
-
The 90bhp was a 1.8 it was never used in the MK3 GTI they're all 2.0 litre 115bhp The only other 90bhp engine was the diesel, definately not in the MK3 GTI
The 11.5 bhp engine you talk of pimpster, I think it must of come out of your lawnmower mate ;)
-
I take it you came from a Metro b4 the golf then?!
Its slower than a Saxo VTR. Nuff said.
-
"one at 90bhp the other at 115 bhp (roughly) for the P and R reg cars "
This was quoted to me by a VW garage.
It sounded like bully - but I saw the car - it was badged as a GTi but didn't have enough torque to pull the skin off a rice pudding
-
I agree with Glen.
90bhp was never a GTI. but i suppose thats what an 8v feels like.... ;)
-
Slim Shady one piece of invaluable advice mate, never, never believe any 'Quote' given to you by a VW (dealership) garage, they are without a doubt the most cretinous bunch of ijots you could ever have the misfortune to get conned by.
Just get yourself on here these guys know more about Golf GTI's than any of those sheysters!
-
You are right guys, the 90bhp was the 1.8 unit, all the gtis had the 2.0 unit which was 1.15bhp :-*
-
You know what VR6 I aint even gonna rise to it mate!
Me > :-X
-
Me to you Glen > :-* :-* :-*
-
VR6 u got mail
Also why do ya blow me so many kisses? I told ya I aint that way inclined!! ;)
-
You've broken my heart now :'(

Behave, my sister-in-law works as a sales person at a VW Dealership!!!
;D

VW dealerships are ok..... they just don't like being helpful ;)
