Title: Rich smelling exhaust?
Post by: mikemk4gti on 18 March 2012, 20:44
Just picked up my 90 mk2 8v today and Ive noticed that the exhaust smells very rich, is this normal or does it need some adjustment? On the 100 mile trip home it averaged 40.8 mpg on the mfa so I dont think its overfueling?

The mfa's do lie best to fill it right up and then do say 100 miles, re fill and work out mpg from there.

yeah thought it probably wasnt too accurate, but did 100 miles on less than £20.

They are very good on fuel on a run mid 40's if driven sensibly is not uncommon.

Yours is a Digi so they are not adjustable, try a new temp sender.

There's a guide in the how to and it says about adjusting the CO level, is this not it?

Well yours is a digi so I don't think it is adjustable as it is controlled through the ecu.

So do I need to adjust the mixture screw?

That I cant answer, it would depend whether or not its out and you wont be able to tell that without a CO meter. Might be best to nip over to a garage to test it or borrow a meter and test as per Rubjonnys guide in the maintence section.

One thing to keep in mind is that older cars do smell like they are running rich compared to cars with catalytic converters.  Doesn't take long to forgot how the exhaust used to smell.
I'd start by having a look at the plugs first.  Should get a good idea that way before you pursue it further.

Just got hold of a Haynes manual and it says about an idle mixture screw, I'll have a proper read later

My Dad has a 2.8i V6 Capri and I'm scared to light a match near that especially when it starts up.  Like pouring fuel straight out the exhausts.
