Just thought I'd post this up on here as Id like to know what you guys think.
I was having a chat with some of the chaps at work yesterday and after football had been covered, cars was the logical progression. And when I first got interested in cars the convos we're basically boasting about how big your engine was, an I always thought it would remain this way, but yesterday the 'Top trump' boast was how good your MPG figure Was!
Not bhp, not cylinders, not top speed, MPG is the new king!
Sign of the times I guess, even I've purchased a vehicle based purely on economy,
Il always keep silly toys but daily stuffs going to be very different from now on
-
but was it good mpg or bad mpg ?
-
Good MPG! Like one of the clients had an Alfa brera, swapped it for a Toyota IQ an gets silly good mpg now.

Was having the same conversation today with a local motor engineer who reckons it's a false economy as the biggest improvements are to be found in bigger engines and that the new tiny engined eco-motors are showing signs of wear after a relatively small mileage whereas the new bigger diesels are giving 50+mpg if driven sensibly and are engineered to last.
-
Well I've gone in the middle, a 1.6 diesel!

Feeling old at 24 over here dad!
-
And are you driving a sensible and fuel efficiant daily yet?
-
Meh, fuck it 26MPG on the commute and a grin on my face is worth it. Though I wouldn't complain if the cost of fuel went down.
-
think i'm going to be getting a 1.4tdi fabia
either that or 1.4 hdi 206

I do a hella lot of motorway drivin and I think the cost of fuel has done more to make people stick to the speed limit than any cameras or owt

Cheeky fecker.
Have you read any reviews on the VW 1.2 TSI? Or driven a car with it? You'd be surprised its a 1.2. Good MPG to from what I've gathered.
-
Doing an average of 50mpg have got up to 63mpg on a couple journeys :)
-
I'm 22 and all I have ever owned are diesels. I have always been chuft about 500+ out of a tank and boast about it regularly.
-

yep. Mk3 had to make way for the Mk4 diesel.
My poor wallet.

For sure, if I were doing more mileage I'd have got another diesel but I don't do a great deal of mileage, around 36miles on my daily commute. I generally stick to the speed limits (most of the time) as I like my clean license - the way I looked at it was if I paid more money for a higher mileage diesel equiv. of my car would have been false economy in the short term, long term it may have been better a better choice, but hey we only got ~9months left before the world ends anyway
-
LISTEN TO YOURSELVES!!!!!!
-
Excellent!...glad your all clearing off to diesel land..more proper fuel left for me..

But have you owned a modern tdi?
-
f**k that sh!t get big engines while you still can! I have 3 cars and two of them are 2.8 six cylinders
-
I've driven many diesels, including the newest ones and i do admit they are better than they used to be but i don't like the way they drive or what it would say about me as a car enthusiast, at some point i have no doubt that i'll have to downsize for financial reasons but my old trusty mk3 won't be replaced by anything that has a 'd' on the bootlid.

the noise gets me
The very latest diesels are very quiet, i just don't like them but i'm sure i'm in a minority these days what with fuel prices.

You are right I suppose, give it 20years when we start running low on our oil reserves and no one will be allowed to drive more than 2L engine I bet...
-
We will all be driving Jetsons cars by then!

Why does driving a diesel have any effect on how much of an "enthusiast" you are?
-
I'm currently on the look out for something that will run on veg oil. Even tempted to try out black diesel which is diesel and old engine oil on a 50/50. Only trouble is I can't have it breaking down cause I've fecked it with oil.
Looking for a MK3 Estate or a DTurbo 306 pre 95. Not sure what pumps Scenics have?
-
Noisy lol try driving my scirocco nothing diesel about it apart from the mpg, seriously though the modern diesel should not be knocked till you have driven one!

Diesel volvo's are supposed to be good for this, 740/440

Went out in my mates 08 Audi a3 sline and that was lovely. Feels like a petrol, pulls well and quite.
But still, you can't beat the sound of a vr6
