Get a recon box fitted.

Gaet a MK1 or MK2, much more reliable... ;)

Reliable? scrap you mean :-*

is this the car you thought was really cheap?
I guess you know why he was trying to get rid of it...

Hi Andy.
I have exactly the same problem with my '96 Golf Gti 8v. Whenever I accelerate too quickly in reverse it pops out of gear.
Did you resolve your issue? I'd be interested to know what happened.
Cheers
Danny

Sounds like the detent plunger that holds the car in reverse has gone. reverse is a straight cut gear and as such will not pull itself in like the helical cut profile on the forward gears.
I would seek advice and see how much it is to get the box rebuilt, It may be a lot or it may not. If push comes to shove then its gonna be a recon box.
