Title: Maybe looking at a mk2 - Purchased :)
Post by: mikemk4gti on 17 March 2012, 23:06
Sold My seat leon 24 hrs after putting it on ebay so Ive now got cash burning a hole in my pocket!
I've found a mk2 90 spec H reg 3dr gti 8v for sale for £900, no major rust at all in any pics. recon engine 30k ago, in tornado red.
Ive read the buying guide on matey-matey and a few others so I've got an idea what to look for, is there any other things that I need to know, Im guessing it is a digifant engine? How can I tell if it is? should it have power steering and elec windows as standard? Can I use vag com on it or is it too old for that?
Any help/advice much appreciated as I dont want to buy a money pit!

Try searching harder...

Rust, Rust, Rust & Guess what RUST! is the biggest thing to look for..... & not always where  you might expect it.. But I guess like most buyers you wont find it till it's too late...

Eleccy window's was an option... If fitted - Bonus... If not - not hard to fit...

Power steering - again an option.... Purists say its a No No - real life drivers say its a must have.... I wouldn't be without it!

Vag Com - Nah... It too old school....

Digifant depends on what it is.... 8V then probably - 16V is a k-Jet...

Got any pics????

under the windscreen does not look good!! its been treated to a nice new thicker seal done with black silicone. This is going to be hiding bubbling along the bottom of the windscreen. Very expensive to put right. The fact the underneath has been wax oiled can also hide a lot of issues. I would have a good prod under there especially round the front jacking points. Rest looks tidy though

Sills! Ask him if he's ever had the covers off, if so are there any photo's, if not ask him to take them off and send you pics and if not take them off yourself. If he declines walk away. may sound silly to some people but i looked at a car identical to that, in the pics it looked even cleaner than that on. guess what? i bought a nail! Check the guttering. if the rubber is lifting away anywhere or there's bubbling, walk away. If he doesn't like the idea of you removing sill covers ask to remove the rear door cards and get a good look in the crevis (take a torch) is there any sign of rust? if yes, walk away or be prepared for possible heaftey welding costs. There are still clean mk2's available for under a grand but generally i try to look for pre 90 as they don't have sill covers and often no arch trim so they cant hide the nasties as well. You can always add big bumpers and sill covers later, after all that's the fun bit. But i assure you your dream will be shattered if you play with it, love it and tinker with it until you get to mot and presented with 6 pages of fail.

Good luck dude, if its sound then it's a bargain!

As said I bought it, I got the seller to remove the inner panels in the back and I had a good look inside and theres no rust, removed the jacking point covers and there perfect too. My dad had to drive the 100 mile trip home and he said it drove perfectly. The gear lever is a bit sloppy so I need to order the parts to fix that. It averaged 40.8 mpg on the way back doing 70mph which I was pleased with. The exhaust smells quite rich? is this Normal or do I need to adjust something? Ive read the how to on setting up the digifant system but if this is normal then theres no need I guess.
Only problem I might have is replacing the roof lining as theres a section of fabric in the back missing.
