It only works with the ignition on.
Check the fuse 42 (20 amp) Mk6 Fuse Locations (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=178454.0)

checked both the 20 amps seem fine! i have TDI by the way....the fuses are next to the battery

Which TDI and what year?
There are different fuse/relay boxes on the mk6.
Autodata shows:
Engine bay - type 1 -05/2009
Engine bay - type 1 05/2009-11/2009
Engine bay - type 1 11/2009-
Engine bay 1 - type 2
Engine bay 2 - type 1
Engine bay 2 - type 2
Fascia 1 -05/2009
Fascia 1 05/2009-11/2009
Fascia 1 11/2009-
Fascia 2
You could add your car spec to your signature then user won't need to ask?
