That is the most stupid idea I've seen, along with bra's. If you care about how good your car looks, you wouldn't cover it in tape or sh!tty bonnet water traps that must chafe the paint. The tape I don't get at all, cos it means 99% of the time the persons car looks sh!te, and only looks ok when they park it and walk away. I hate stone chips too, but if I was asked to ruin the look of my car, just so it looks good 1% of the time, I'd say you need your head testing. Don't do it my man, suffer the odd chip, then if you must, paint again in 10years. Don't be so wet ffs!

mk2bal - when your running about 200miles to get to a show i think a bit of tape isnt going to cause you any harm from time to time esp when its only a show car! its not a daily so itll only be put on when going long distances not to run it everyday! i agree with the bra etc but this as a one off to and from a show thats miles away i dont think does any harm..

dragonfly & X4MGS - cheers guys ill take a look into it :)

He's talking about a show car, that he want's no keep in A1 condition. You need to think of his car as an object that he cherishes, not as a car in the true sense of the word that is a tool for getting you to the shops and back.

It may seen allien to some people that others like to do this, but imagine you had an antique painting that you were taking to an exhibition. Would you just throw it in the back of a van to slide around, and risk getting it damaged? No, you'd make sure it was safely packed up and securely tied down. Same principle, different items.

I still dont understand how a small layer of tape is going to help prevent stone chips?

Throw any thing at 70mph at the front of a car Im pretty sure itl make a mark. Especially a stone.

Such a shame to have a mk2 "show car"

A wonderful drivers car that should be driven as often as possible.  Not merely cleaned, polished and looked at.

Of course it will prevent chips to the paint. It's the sharp edges of stone and chippings hitting the paint that cause stone chips. If the stone doesn't touch the paint, it can't chip it. Granted, it wont prevent dents, but how many "stone dents" do you have on your car.

Well, this can happen when you drive past a gritting truck!

Ah.  Ok then.  Best needed for the MK1. Keeps the paint in good order, and keeps the car together.

After first inspection as expected good and bad lol the front panel seems solid and original (factory barcode still on there) engine bay area again seems solid which is a bonus but then the passenger sill has been replaced....cant coment on quality of work as its covered in primer and filler so need to strip that back but most likely be cut off and new replacement panel (included with car) put on. but driver side inner and outter sill pretty fubar

few more holes in floor

Nice bodge with some silicone and fibre glass, Pure class used on that repair!

And this is what happened when i was stripping her down....bit of rust lol

Spare wheel well is solid which is always a bonus, other area that needs attention is scuttle

Not too bad, may be able to repair instead of replacing hole panel unless i can get a new genuine panel.

So i started stripping her down to see what horrors she holds and get her ready for repairs and it would appear its had a new rear panel at some point (not the greatest job) and also had new sills and outer arches welded in

Which is unbelievable really that someone has spent money doing that and now its in this state.
At end of play yesterday this is how she stood

What an interesting thread!

"Scene Tape"

The Blue tape that you have seen, is most likely 3M water resistant masking tape, applied 3 or 4 layers thick, will provide excellent protection against "Road rash", one of the benefits of using this tape is its a "Low tack" tape, meaning that its unlikely to pull fresh paint off, which could be quite embarrassing having just arrived at a show...

I use it to gauge what time a show is going to end! ie, the blue tape gets broken out about 45mins before the end of a show, leaving at this point is normally good practice, to avoid getting stuck in the traffic

Me, I just get my foot down on the way home! sod the stone chips..

just buy a trailer tbh

or just dont wash your car, a good layer of mud will protect it from stone chips     i think that stuff would jinx the trip  if i put that stuff on a car it would end up slideing down the road on its roof most likely

I only ever fit this tape to the boot plynth corners when going to shows. Dirt collects at the back of mk2's if anything
The tape is a cheap and simple idea for the show days. Bonnet bra's do more damage than protect.

Suprised most show cars have not fitted stone guards yet?

I just don't get this - at all....

I use my car as a Daily & I abuse it to feck.... Carry interiors, bumpers and god knows what else...

& I've spent £1000's on her and she is of show quality, but she's still my daily ride....

I'm more worried about car park dents than stone chips... Car Park dent you can avoid by not being there - but stone chips happen from the car being driven....

What is the point in having a drivers car and NOT DRIVING IT!!!

Makes no sense to me but I Have had a few V&C!!!

Totaly get you guys. Just can't fit it to the front. Thats as ghey as apply wax to paintwork with bare hands.

My mates corrado got taped before a show. The paint was fresh and it came off with the tape at a show

I remember last year I won the GTi International 'best mk2' even though I use mine every day. The guys with the expensive resprays and taped fronts were not happy.  One for the daily crew

Yeah he's right, as if you trailer or don't drive your mk2 properly, you're missing out. Wrapping it in cotton wool and polishing it every time you stop does not count as enjoying a mk2. Bang an abf/20vt in it so it half moves, then feel the 130+mph stone chips!!! Aah!!! Still better than being gay and wet behind the ears
