Changing:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/DG_201202
So basically I'm worse off then a new driver that passes after the new rules.
Total load of crap. I assume I'll never be able to tow more then 750 withought a further license? This won't change anything for me?
-
I passed 16 years ago so hoping nothing will change for me as I need it to drive my truck with a car on the spec lift sometimes
-
So irritating.
Could someone please confirm that if I stick a MK3 on the back of my dad's LT (both should be together under 3500kgs) that he can tow it. License well before 1997.
Cheers.
-
your DAD can tow loads, it will just be down to towing capacity of the LT
and as its a g3, its liable to be close
and its not just towing your missing out on
minibuses, 7.5 tonne wagons, to name two
-
interesting......
more excuses to take money from the motorist

This is hardly news and it ensures licensed nippers are safer on the road than us oldies.
-
Plus if you DO pass your test and get a trailer you'll be able to sell your services to your peers who can't tow legally.
-
Ok cheers guys. Just going to double check the weight of the LT.
Am looking at a trailer. Do we think a MK3 TDi will tow cars or should I just hold out for the MK4?
-
Neither  cos once you add in the weight of the trailer you will be lucky if the car can tow anything much bigger than a mini, legally :lipsrsealed:
And Thia is regarding the towing capacity of the tow car, not ur licence

And we're talking about a classic mini her and not a BMW.

I passed my test in 1993...and due to a DVLA cock up when i went photo card (and removing points) I lost my 7.5t (grandfather) rights so I'm stuck with a 3.5 ton max!!
(b.t.w I tried to get my old classes back but the computer said no.....and you can't complain about the dvla!! fookers)
-
What is actually changing? I though that was what the rules were already?

Same here.....a standard car licence has only ever allowed the holder to tow 750 kilos. The 3500 kilos thing is because that is all your licence allows. I have "Grandad" rights and can drive upto 7500 kilos and can tow 750 kilos also. To me nothing has changed  :undecided:
-
To us nothing has changed. But from 2013 anyone that passes their test can now tow more then 750 as long as both are under 3500kgs.
Just looked at a MK4 wagon, has a braked towing of 1500KGS. Should be enough for most hatchbacks + trailer? That's all I really deal with in all fairness. The GTI according to Parkers is 1070KGS.
This is all confusing. Wonder how much insurance is on a Rav4 or something.

Why are you complaining then?
-
Because we (passed test after 1st Jan 1997) can only tow a maximum weight of 750kgs including the trailer. Drivers passing test after 2013 can tow up to 3.5T without having to do another test but we have to do the test to be able to tow the extra weight.

But I passed in 2008, I can tow a trailer over 750kgs as long as it is braked and car and trailer combined weigh less than 3500kgs and the trailer doesn't weigh more than 75% of the tow vehicle, I would only need B+E entitlement if I wanted to tow with a combined weight of over 3500kgs or wanted to tow a trailer that is heavier than the car, so I can't see any change. or have I got it completely wrong?
I've never had a problem towing a trailer, been pulled a couple of times but not even the coppers know what the rules are, so if I'm wrong I've been lucky.

If this is the case then I cannot see what has changed and what the "new rules" are. I've got confused if it is the case.

and guess what, 95% of the polis that have to deal with this are just as fooking confused
espeically if they stop you towing a racecar on the back of a motorhome :lipsrsealed:
