Hi all,
Just put a vr6 in my mk3 cabrio. went fine until i tried to run it !!!
when ignition was switched on the fuel pressure regulator was whistling dixie, luckily i just happen to have another vr6 so swapped it over and now it sounds like its venting somewhere else.
It will turn over and fire but then dies, leave it a few seconds and it will do the same.
any help would be great as im out of idea's

Been doing more research and it seems the ecu has an immobiliser !!!

Sounds like an immobiliser fault.
Or if the fuel pump is running the whole time it's possible you've not earthed the ECU correctly and blown that.

pump is running all the time but wires were all in before i attempted to start.

ECU does not have immobiliser like on MK4s but you need transponder and chip from donor car .. just incase u not done that

thought i swapped everythin over, what does it look like ?

The transponder and chip are built into the key, did not not get a set of keys with the doner car?

no need to swap the whole barrel you can just take the immo pickup ring off the donor... which plugs into the immo box behind the dash which i reallllly hope you haven't sent to the scrapyard!

nope still in my scrap yard aka the front garden!!!
so is it the brown ring that plugs into the brown box? i suppose that means i will have to pull the dash out :cry:

Yea it's the brown ring u need plus the chip out of the donor key (replace the chip in your own keys for the one from the donor car :wink:)
And as toph says u need the little immob box that the brown ring plugs into

Not that the ECU's immobilised you understand, it's just that it has an immobiliser. :huh:

This sounds like a wiring fault before you get to the immobiliser problems. Even immobilised the pump should prime and then shut off. It should not run constantly.
Sounds like the wiring's a long way off running yet.

As DH said if the pump is running all the time you have a wiring issue or maybe even a blown ecu, I do not think you have an immobiliser issue

Do you use a third party alarm? I.e CLifford etc?
Installers tend to wire in the fuel pump immobiliser in such a way that it WILL prime constantly when the alarm is disabled and the ignition is on.
If you do not have an alarm installed, from factory a OBD1 engine will prime then shut off after a few seconds. An OBD2 motor will NOT prime until the engine is turned over.
If your saying you can here a hiss, I would double check all of your vacuum pipes. There is one hidden under the throttle body to the left that is sometimes missed. This along with the vacuum that leads to the fuel pressure regulator is worth checking.

thanks for all the info, not had time to get on it today :sad:
there was a black box in the car (vw/audi stamp) which was a total mess i traced back to a bare wire connection (went to starter), cut it out and fed a new wire to the ignition (where the other bare wire connection was!!)
Engine is late obd2

grrr aftermarket immobs. useless fecking things.
immob issue ~( factory ) should start abd cut after 3 seconds or so. ether swap the barrel, immob box and chip over in the key.
or just swap the box plug the other rf id loop in and bung the donor key in that loop to prove the system.
it is easyer the just to vag com it tho

Ok, swapped over key, ring and box while i was changing the clocks :smiley:
think the ecu is fooooked tho :cry:
I had a search around the earths and had missed the one from the battery, which connects under the battery tray (not sure which bolt it should go on front or back?), don't know if this made any difference? have checked earths to fuse box 4 times now!!! not sure why all the wires are the same each time :grin:
will have to find another ecu as i think the other one i have is for a 2.9.
Pump still running constant :angry:
only swapped engine loom and pump was running fine before (2.0 8v) so must be ecu.

at least i can get on for the minute.
