Hello all,
I have a week of work now and want to rebuild the head on my motor.
Just need to know what parts would i need to buy?
Chris
-
what was wrong with the old one?
-
Well.. How hardcore do you want to go?
valves.
Valve springs.
oil stem steals.
volume matching.
tappets.
Smoothing the combustion chamber.
Porting & Polishing.
Compression test.
etc..
-
Gives me something to do :D
I was looking to do a port and polish :D and what ever is needed really.

Chris, If you are new to this, watch ALL the videos:
HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23MTtYGZEQ8)
NB: 8v just had 8 fewer valves.

saw these a while back, that what makes me think i can do it :p
Just really wanted a parts list i can take to gsf and go... "oi, gives me these" :D

Ah ok.
Well you want to port and polish the exhaust manifold and maybe the combustion chamber (the shallow bowl where the valves rest)
And you want to roughen up the inlet manifold. This may seem counter intuitive, but in fact you need the rough surface to aid the mixing of the fuel and air before it enters the cylinder.
The smooth surface of the exhaust manifold speeds the release of the exhaust gasses.

awsome cheers man, makes sense actually cause obviously turbulent air will make it mix :D SCIENCE!

As a must. Valve stem oil seals.
Valves, unless bent, can be cleaned up and reground.
Springs Should be ok. Line them up and put a rule across the top. If they're are all the same height, then their rates should be ok.
Tappets as well.
-
How do i go about the regrounding?
-
Are you wanting to completely refurbish it?
Cylinder head stand makes things easier
Valve spring compressor
Torque wrench
All the usual sockets and extensions
I could list loads here but i am not sure how deep you want to get in to it. I'd say get some wire brush bits and clean your valves is a must, finish the faces off with emery paper in two stages leaving the face polished. Replace the cap bearings, oil stem seals, check the guides for play and replace if necessary, suction cup and grinding compound to lap the valves back in. Wire brush the ports and remove all the built up carbon/dirt.
Get a good engine blueprinting book man, well worth it and you'll learn loads.
-
ill give it all ago, worst comes to worst ill buy a new head :D
-
thats the spirit! It's always worth making freinds with your local engine shop, don't go to gsf, go see some old boy in a unit somewhere trust me

they can get the better quality parts and have all the knowledge you need, your going to have to get it skimmed and faced anyway before you put it back on the car so take the head in in advance and ask for some tips and he'll show you on the spot if he's a sound enough guy. good luck dude, it's rather theraputic!
