Why you should put a filter on your lens! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47903765@N00/6835880824/) by AlistairBeavis (http://www.flickr.com/people/47903765@N00/), on Flickr

The result of dropping my camera 1metre onto the pavement. It was in a soft camera case and landed lens down, so the lens cap and filter protected my 50mm prime.
The filter obviously absorbed the impact, the camera and lens are fine.

So if anyone questions the purchase of a simple filter for the front of the lens or a decent case.... just get one.

I did the same a few months back except on a carpet  :undecided:

Just make sure you're careful cleaning the lens as odds are you're going to have lots of little glass particles on it, so use a blower on it first

I slipped down some steps recently with my kata camera rucksack on, and landed on my back/arm, sod the pain, it was all about checking if the camera was ok!

Nice, the kata (kdr465i i think) is padded but not to that extent

I suppose the best place to fit the camera compartment is the bottom of the bag (for more comfortable weight distribution), although you risk falling on your expensive gubbins.

My camera was fine though :afro:

Yup, I need a replacement filter, but I'm not going to risk taking the 50mm prime anywhere till I've got a new filter on it.

You wouldn't believe it, but it's happened again.

This time my 18month old got hold of my camera and dropped it, with no case about 30-50cm onto the floor (thankfully with carpet) and smashed the UV filter on the front of my new Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens. So that's another new filter needed and a 77mm one at that, which is a bit more expensive than the 49mm on the other lens. Grr.
Thankfully the lens is fine.
