All depends on driving style, weather, engine etc
it is low, I CAN get 42/43 out of my mapped 1.8t, but I average 37/39 daily, driving to and from work, about 40 miles each way. Alot less with a heavy right foot though
-
That does seem low mate :undecided: Maybe it's as simple as a good service, some trusty redex and some cleaning!
As above, I'm hitting near enough 40 on my commute.

A good service could improve it dramatically. Just done mine and its a definate improvement.

my old vr6 did 32mpg on a run my 1.8t does 34-36mpg so a 1.6 that is sh!t tbh
-
I am getting 23mpg average, I am hoping with the new lambda it is a little better.
-
i get around 36mpg but most of my driving is start, stop around manchester. mine is a 1.6 16v
thats only a calculation from a full tank to empty, waiting for my stalk to be fitted so i can see the mpg!
-
1.8 t standard I have managed 42, average 30mile motorway trip I can get 38mpg
Around town around 28mpg. Unless I'm in a rush
-
1.8T AGU around town between 19 and 21. Mine needs a GOOD service then. Was going to in couple months anyways. What could improve this also?

Good service as you said , New spark plugs,Air filter, Oil and filter change.Do a TB clean too, and get it scanned for fault codes

yep thats wat i was thinking
i did replace the MAp sensor with a Europarts one a few months back due to a idling problem, could this have anything to do with it?
-
my mates old 1.6 polo cl did about 28mpg he fitted a new coolant temp sender and did over 40 mpg after that so i would look to see if yours is ok as vw's seem to go through them alot
-
@Richw911 Yeah will get all that done. And i've done the fault code check. You all told me to get the eBay vag com  3 codes. But nothing serious if i remember. Will have another check tomorrow.
P.s This site need a iPhone app for when im skiving at work. (Quite a lot)
-
i tend not to look at my MPG my wallet hide's! :lipsrsealed:
-
average/conservative driving 37 - 42 mapped 1.8t BUT can also be seen at 17-18 wen i jave my heavy work boots on
-
Is it more economical when the car is mapped?
-
wish my 1.8t did this good mpg as all you get! haha im only geting 20 ish only ever seen 40 once at 60 mph on motorway haha and mines well service
-
lol dan you need to be gentle with that right foot mate to see 40 haha
-
I've NEVER seen 40  Well had the car since start of Feb and been on motor way once.
-
it was showing 13 the other day! haha, plus boost is too much fun :)

would a engine code come up if this was knackered? tell tale signs?

It will do, but it's not only sensors that affect the economy of the engine, wear and tear will often deteriorate it too. My engine was on 150k miles and I was getting around 27-32mpg average around town driving very carefully but my compression was down a bit - albeit consistently down across all 4 cylinders with a lot of blow-by which can only have hurt my mpg before.

This was how my piston was looking before I cleaned it up!
Also found that 2 of my exhaust valves were not seated as nicely as it is now, so again losing compression there. All adds up, but with a fresh motor I am anticipating healthy mpg

Average about 38mpg all depends how heavy your right foot is and your driving style. If your smoth you'll notice a small difference in mpg but not enough to make you rich lol.
Did an eco driving test this afternoon, first trip- drove like the average driver, hard accelerating and braking, averaged 46.8 mpg for 7.8 miles in 15 mins 30 secs, second trip- drove the same route but this time smoothly, braking only when necessary and maintaining momentum as much as possible, averaged 61.3 mpg and the journey only took 5 seconds longer!! That's a 31% increase in fuel efficiency; in other words, you could use up to a third less fuel by simply changing your driving style. If you spent £100 in fuel each month that's a total of £400 saved per year- think about it!
From a mate who's a driving instructor

I've just got 386 miles from a full tank till the light came on and only 75 of that was motor way miles and thats with my 1.8 turbo

think bottom half of tank is smaller?
haha mine does that, nearly bang on 200 at half a tank, and then it all goes down hill from there!
-
i filled my car and have put some more in tonight guage on total emply.. took 65 66 quid to fill and i got 240 miles to full tank how are you guys geting such good mpg with a 1.8t! aahaha :) or maybe its the dump valve making me wanting to make it dump... haha
-
Maybe they have a Fred Flintstone cut out at the bottom so the can save petrol in traffic :)
-
Speaking of petrol light, does anyone know of the top of their head roughly how many miles are left in the tank once the petrol warning light come on?
-
i was told a good few years back that when your light comes on there's around a gallon left
not sure how true??

Sounds about right as i've been told around 30miles before. Just wondering how true that was. cheers

I think the manual says something like 6-8 litres. Left when the light comes on.
