Title: Front washers not working
Post by: Pearce69 on 13 March 2012, 16:30
Hey all,

Right basically the washers will not work. They only work sometimes when the wipers are on full speed therefore they are not blocked. Iv checked the fuse and relays there all fine. When I pull the stick back it also doesn't engage the wipers. What could this be?

Probably faulty stalks.

Can you hear the motor pump buzzing every time you pull back the stalk, on every wiper stalk position?

Find a scrappy nick one off a MK3 (it on the body of the water resivour) I did! Just pull it out and just incase cut the power plug if its different from yours so you can splice it up if need be!

I will have to check, but im pretty sure nothing is happening unless its on the final position then it kinda squirts on and off.

I meant pump NOT STALK fella!
Its a plug into type its a pump if yours is on its way out or clogged up it can sometimes come on and off, I thought try a old pump of a Mk3 and plug it into your water tank wire it up job done. If not then take on the stalk by taking stalk off the steering column and clean it up, remove any dirty grease over the years you might be lucky?

If it was the pump would it not spray on and off in all positions not just the fastest?

so it does spray trickle or full force?

If it sprays full force strip down the stalk clean it up otherwise start looking for one I'm sure GSF should do a replacement?

Disconnect the water tubes from the pump and then test.  If the pump works then its a fault with your stalks.

Take the stalk out clean it up where you can tighten it back on tight sometimes the contacts on it can come loose, other wise get a replacement!
15min job!

Stalk for sure. I've just done mine. Be careful when removing the stalk. I wasn't and I had to rebuild all the contacts and springs into the stalk. Nightmare

I broke the full beam part of it so gotta find a new one now lol. Couldn't get it to work when I cleaned it all tho. I think the spring might of had it. What options have I got stalk wise? I got a early gti 1987 I believe the connections are different?

Well i got a new stalk and fit it. Now the wipers are working when i try to spray washers but no water still. the rears are also not squirting. Also a strange thing. when i pull the stick back to spray the rear wiper goes too. When i disconect the wire on top of the pump (i think its the pump anyway) only the front wipers go like they should. Any ideas guys? need this fixing so i can get her on the road n drive her :)

Sounds like the pump is bust and the stalk unit you've fitted is faulty!

Yeah I do.... Had the same issue with my '88 GTI - i.e. the front works the rear...

That was a stalk and if you can hear the pump but no water that means it's knackered...

I lost the front washers once but that was due to a trapped line when I shut the bonnet.... Took me ages to figure that one out!! & I doubt yours will be that as the rear washer line runs through the firewall - along the loom and up the c pillar so very unusual to get a trapped line...

Mind you thinking about it my rear stopped once and I found that the fluid was coming out where the rear sunroof drain holes are as the T connector behind the C pillar had come adrift....

Afraid its a process of elimination.... Until you find something!!

Get a multimeter on the connector and see if there is any power... I think you have to earth the meter against the body!

Would be easier with 2 people!!

Fixed it

It was my stalk that was the problem. the new stalk i got is wired different to my one so i had to fix my one and bend the contacts. Should of done it in the 1st place but it did look like they were touching.
