Fifa 12 - bored of it and my controller was in serious danger of being thrown through the window due to losing online.
GT5 - also bored of it, same old tracks etc etc. plus the online vs is utter crap and full of idiots.
grid - bought it, played it once, sold it, not impressed at all.
i would like to try a platform game that will keep me occupied with the choice of a bit of online play as well? never really been a fan of the war based games but might give them a go? also what about assassins creed?
i'm no serious gamer, just play when the mrs is out or reading her kindle but i'm out of touch with whats good. i used to love metal gear solid on ps1/2.
whats out there? the cheaper the better

try portal and portal 2 , both excellent/

If you go for assassins creed, I recommend starting with number 2, the first one can be missed although its also awesome, but there are a lot of references in brotherhood and revelations that refer to the previous games.
They will keep you entertained for ages, when I finished brotherhood I cant explain how much I needed to play the next one just to continue the story

thanks for the tips, looking into all of the above

I'd also recommend Mass Effect. Unfortunately the 1st game isn't available on PS3 but the 2nd and 3rd games are. They are fantastic games, and the story running throughout all 3 is very good too.
It's a mix between an Sci-Fi RPG and a straight up shooter. IMO it's a perfect blend. The ending of the 3rd is a bit of a miss for a good number of fans but Bioware have hinted that there's more in the pipeline, so it's all good.
If you do go for it though, there's an "Arrival" DLC for the 2nd game which lets you make all the decisions from the 1st game so that you don't miss out. It's worth getting as there are some significant consequences of certain actions.

Loads of really good games for like £15ish on Amazon
LA Noir is epic and heard nowt but good things about Uncharted series
Metal Gear Solid is on sale too

Skyrim is a good shout - I've wasted far too many nights glued to that game 'cause there's just so much to do you can never complete it or get bored! IT may not be high-octane car racing (also good) but it's one heck of an impressive game.

make you sure you play assassins creed in order, it makes a lot more sense that way, plus you'll find the newer games way more fun once you stick at and complete the original.
-
Heavy Rain - has loys of different endings which depend on how u play the game very addictive
-
call of duty 3 .Its one ill never stop playing online its so much fun with tanks jeeps and bikes.

My first recommendation would be Skyrim. I bought that at the end of 2011 and until a month or so ago it didn't come out of the PS3. Absolutely the most addictive game I've ever played...I could spend an entire day playing it, but I can equally pop into it for an hour or two.
The Assassin's Creed games are excellent as well. The first one gets you used to the controls and game-style, but doesn't really last too long. The second is the best one I feel...great story, very involving. Wasn't too bothered about the third, (Brotherhood), but am quite liking the fourth, (Revelations).
I've only played one Uncharted game...the second I think it was. Very good.
(No doubt you're seeing a theme...third person adventures.)
Did you want to buy a Steering Wheel to give GT5 a bit of a boost? I bought one when I got GT5 and it's pretty good.
