How hot does your car get??
While going along mine sits just under half way, but if it sits idle for a little while the temp gague starts to creep up...i havent left it there to see how far it would go but so far its got past half way and almost up to 3/4 of the gague.
Is this normal or should it sit at a constant level of heat no matter what the car is doing?

I had not heard it kick in before but when i left it running for a bit last night after i switched it off i could hear that it was going, or i think it was that as i didnt physically look but it sounded like it.
Would you say that it is running too hot then?

Like DH said its normal course of owning a MK2
There are options to cool the engine further but really only if track the car.
I would check if the fans are running you should hear and feel the hot air come off it
If you are that worried you can ;
Buy a TDI temp sensor switch that sits on the rad itself the idea is the fan kicks in earlier to deal with heat sooner.
But down side the fan will be on a lot more and can wear out quicker!
Or buy a decent slim line fan can't remember the name of it I think Kenlowe
Third expensive option is to stick a oil cooler to help cooling! (Track)
I've bought a ALU radiator to deal with my heat issues!
If you get stuck in summer traffic stick the heating on at full chatt the heater matrix is your second rad :laugh:

My valver doesn't really go over half way on the gauge but you have to remember that all sensors and gauges will be slightly different and probably never been tested for calibration. In some cases if you don't have a VAG or at least a Febi temperature sensor it will complete rubbish.
Some people could even argue that the gauge reading you see is more qualitative then quantitative. I've seen more modern cars where the gauge is replaced just with a light that is blue for cold, no light when warm and red when overheating.

TBF 110C is fine tipping point is when oil starts to break down from there onwards, plus it only ever reaches 3/4 in traffic for ages?
