Hi.
I have a 1991 mk2 16v Golfy. It has OEM windows and they no longer work. I've checked number 53 relay by swapping it with the other 53 ( horn I think?) relay and still no joy. Are they fused elsewhere?
They don't click, don't light up, they just sit there!
Any thoughts please everyone?

I had a similar fault with my old Astra, I drill out the rivets on the winders, cleaned the winder mechanisms up (they were full of rubbish) and re rivetted them together, they worked fine after that. It might not work on the Golf but it's maybe worth a look?

Thanks JT.
That's a good call but I think it must be electrical as the switches don't even light up when the used to!
Still should clean out the mechs though, another job for the list!
Cheers

Ah nice one. May well be that relay behind the console then! That's a job for tonight. Have tried the relay and fuse mentioned I think.
Cheers Glove, handy information.......

if both windows have stopped working then it has to be something that they share which is causing the fault!!

You're right, it was!
Traced back the window loom from the console to the thick bunch of wires behind the fuse board. Checked each one to notice the main brown earth had come adrift from the earthing bus bar!
Result, connected it back on, ignition on and....I have windows again!
Thanks everyone and thanks Ktuludays for hinting in the right direction!
Happy happy joy joy.

Cheers Glove!
Has been one of those achievement evenings with Golfy.
Fitted an LED to the handbrake warning light, it had never worked.
Sorted the windows
Took apart the whole dash to fit my old clocks but this time got them straight and with all bulbs working!
Found a missing screw for the dash, now a lot more substantial.
Still loads to do but as you say, really gratifying to sort the issues and not pay someone else!
Cheers!

Take off the door card and have a look. If the motor turns but no window movement, could be a broken/jammed cable.
Over time the metal swarf from the cable, mixed with grease and dirt, can block up the guide tube and foul up the gear cog/worm gear in the motor assembly.

ok thanks. Another job on the list

As long as the cable hasn't snapped (as mine did) it's repairable.
