Title: Spacers
Post by: ScottA on 11 March 2012, 22:01
What can I get away with on the GTI with OEM Monza Shadows? I ran 10mm front and 12mm rear on the A3, and it was on coilovers, and had no rubbing at the front (after removing the arch screw) and had slight rubbing at the rear. So, I am thinking 8mm front and 10mm rear to be safe. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

I wouldn't, when I went touring last summer in Europe with my MK6 with Monza Shadows fitted. The car was fully loaded and the rear tyres where very close to the arches and would have rubbed if using spacers. Just a word or warning if you ever need to be fully loaded.

I've fitted 8" wide x 18 BBS CH wheels (50ET) to my car and the fronts are absolutely flush with the arches. As the standard wheels are 7.5", you could if you wished (although personaly I wouldn't) fit 12mm spacers.

The rears appear to have more clearance, so I guess you could get away with more.

I've not tried spacers on the front but ran a pair of 10mm spacers on the rear of my last mk6 when it had standard sized 7.5 x 18 Monzas. No rubbing when carrying 4 people and luggage in the boot.

What's the offset on Monzas?

I run 8.5" wide ET52 wheels on 225 tyres, lowered 25mm and I'm not close at the rear, even when fully loaded...it's closer at the front, but still no rubbing - ever.

51mm offset on the 7.5 inch Monzas Glen, with 225 tyres on there is heaps of room in the rear arches but not so much at the front.
With 41mm offset 8 inch wide Interlagos wheels wearing 235 tyres the sidewall protrudes about 5mm or so at the front but my non lowered car didn't have any rubbing or catching issues (which some mk5 owners have reported).
My ET44 8'' wide BBSs sit pretty flush both front and back and you can see why BBS used this measurement for the mk5/6.
