When I brought my car I was aware on first innitial start up it burnt a little oil (which to his word was only on first start up) I was advised by the seller that he had taken it to a vw technician who informed him it was more than likely the valve stem oil seals as these are very common to wear in 1.8t engines (not sure how true this is?? ??) anyway my cars just clocked 87.000 miles with FSH...
How ever the smoking is becoming worse, Ie if you get stuck at a red light and let the car idle it almost builds up in then when you move off it clears it self again so basically when the car is sat idling anywhere hot or cold it builds up then once reved or moved it clears itself!
Ive just had a quick look around and I have seen 2 of my engines (AUQ 180) one with 47,000 miles the other 76,000 miles priced under £500 each.....
questions...
are there any tests you can do to see where it is burning oil from?? Ie turbo, valve stem oil seals etc??
what sort of price would you expect to pay for the leaking to be fixxed??
would you buy one of the above engines instead??
thanks
-
do you know any mechanics
-
av you scanned for fault codes?? also how does it drive does it pull ok??
-
If its valve stem seals, would have thought the seals would b cheap to buy but ud need to change all 20 of them one on each valve.i done this on my escort but was only an 8 valve and u needed a special tool to do it.on the escort you changed 4 with the valves in up posistion then rotated camshaft and changed other 4.wouldnt have a clue how easy it would b to do on a mk 4 though :undecided:
-
I don't think the stem seals are cheap on their own

was only bout 2 quid each for me escort but that was about 13 years ago lol,id say get it scanned, talk to a good mechanic and get quotes seems a bit drastic swapping engines when urs is relativly low milage to.

Il perhaps go see my mechanic during the week, How ever I guess untill its stripped your not going to know where its burning from :undecided:!? so that could mean whipping the head of or the turbo for no reason costing labour £££
The car has an emmisions code but im fairly thats becasue of the de-cat messing with the lambda sensors! but pulls and drives as strong as it should do.
I had a quick look and seals are around the £30 mark for a pack of 20. but obviously its going to be the labour thats going to cost for this repair!
Toby when I had my turbo off last week I noticed a few hair line cracks on the inside near the wastegate was yours similiar place? mine also bloody stinks
how much did the ko4 set you back and where did you pick it up from?
cheers guys still dont know what to do haha

i had a 49k engine and almost every part under the bonnet to go with it for £500 but old one was seized  so needed to

Get it looked at by a VW specialist they may spot something you haven't, it does sound like stem seals however they are NOT common to wear on 1.8T's :undecided:
My guess is the turbo
