after long discussion with my dad , i have come to the conclusion that i need a car which is good on my money
my dad said he will lend me between £1000 and £1500 so looking at getting a 05ish astra 1.7 cdti is really cheap to insure and can get around 60-65mpg
i do a lot of miles nowadays easily 300+ per week so diesel i think would be better option
i had a look at vw diesels but all too much to insure
does any one have any experience of these astras or recommend any other cheap to run cars which aren't hideous
il will be back to VAG as soon as i can looking to get some sort of project maybe a caddy or mk1 golf
-
If the Focus floats your boat, then you can get one for a similar price to the Astra. And they're cheap to insure too.
-
heard of some bad problems when looking at reviews but il keep them in mind.....
-
and astras dont
Right,
1, any astra for that price will be a DOG
2, 60 -65 mpg        yeah right, unless your doing ALL motorway driving it Like miss daisy then you WONT be getting anywhere near that in the REAL world figures.
so, I will make a suggestion
a, look for a 1.4tdi 3 cylinder polo.
b, you will get better MPG than the astra, wont have the DMF issues and will get a better car for your cash
c, search on here for the one that Diamond hell, horney, then me and finally The Doc own/owned.
its taken a right load of abuse, a remap and its still spanking along
I will return with a suggest or 2 in a mo

yes they are older, but i know which one I would own and i work at a Vauxhall garage :lipsrsealed:

Unfortunately with reviews, all you'll ever see is the people with problems moaning about the cars and fewer people praising them because most cba to post a good review.
-
i would love one of them polos but there a lot more to insure than an astra and i would have my own money to put towards too so budget of around 2-2.5k
polo is around £1800 a year whereas astra is £1300
-
well i think you need to do more insurance legwork
this is a group 6

unless you are getting the lower powered engine, in which case you deffo wont be getting 60+mpg :lipsrsealed:
-
that astra was the sxi version the normal ones are insurance group 4
-
well u seem set on one, good luck. :lipsrsealed:
-
been checking loads of cars on insurance and they seem the cheapest

Not bad
I know of a 1.1 89 Fiat uno with under 50k miles in mint condition for a monkey, i might even have it myself @ £150 fully comp
-
really wouldn't really want to own vhauxhall, espectaly wouldn't want to own one out of warranty ever..
mates reacently bought an 09 insignia it's a bit crap tbh gets no where near the quoted MPG and it's just had to have a new ecu to top it off the staff in the garage are
a)unhelpfull & unplesant to deal with. b) give the inpression of being morons.

Listen to this man...^^^^^^
I have had a couple of Astra's... One of them only had 26k on the clock when I bought it, Bang £1000 here, pop £200 there, snap another £200. In the end I realised that even though it was cheap to run (ish) and cheap to insure, things broke and they cost a lot to fix.
-
i had an astra as my first car for over 2 years  only problem i ever had was the water pump
went, other than that it was good as gold, although it had a bit of an oil addiction
-
some people say there crap some say there amazing .....
-
and some people work for vauxhall  :lipsrsealed:

LOL
Have you checked out insurance on MK4 110 diesel golfs? My renewal came in at £460 through HIC - 24 with 2 years NCB and licence for 2 years.
Was very surprised.
Not that it hasn't been problematic! Standard MK4 sh1te....... :lipsrsealed:
-
I've had 2 Astravan diesels through work, and they have both been very good :lipsrsealed:
But then i also had a combo and that was awful
-
My first car was a mk2 astra that was 16 year old at the time, had it for 9 months, never put a foot wrong, but when MOT came up, it required more spending on it than was worth. I also had an 55 plate focus at 2 years old. Had it for 9 months also, and it needed a new clutch and slave cylinder, alternator, coil pack, and something else but I cant remember what..........
The other sh!tter I had was a Pug 307, but I'm not even gonna entertain the thought such is my hatred for it (it only lasted 3 months!)
The only cars that have actually caused me very little trouble and I have kept for longer than a year (I get bored quickly) are the Saab 9-3, although that was expensive when it came to servicing, and VAG which are easy to do yourself anyway.

They the 6k chassis ones? as I love them, yet I was looking at altea's earlier and keep getting really poor insurance quotes on any diesel, 2years 3 years NCB and they want £1800 for a 110PD regardless of which vag car, they can pi$$ right off, my 1.8T is only £900 :lipsrsealed:
-
6k chassis ?? and yeh on a 1.2 insurance is very cheap which is what i need atm

I like the look of them, I just don't understand why I am getting monkey quotes on diesels with identical milage etc... less power... better safety rating and lower insurance group over a 1.8T GTi??? Insurance makes no sense as the Altea is bang in my price range, perfect size and better MPG, might have to start looking at smaller petrols which I hate
-
im getting the mk4 which the next one up from the one you want :)
