Title: Potential buyer, really unsure!
Post by: Horrgakx on 08 March 2012, 22:11
I drove my mates 115bhp GTdTi diesel with 160k miles yesterday, I was amazed at the quick acceleration, pity the car was a dog :) But today I drove a 1.8T GTi (150) with 126k miles, a nice drive with no rattles etc, but I was very disappointed with the performance. I know they can be chipped but is it worth it for price/performance?

Thanks.

Diesels are all talk i mean torque

1.8t are borin without a map it's worth spending a little to gain a lot in performance and wen I say a little just make sure it's running ok, put air filter and uprated diverter valve on it and your good for a remap.

If its for fun get a petrol, if it's for a lot of mileage go derv

Standard 150bhp is not that good / quick but a remap will make a lot of difference.

Acceleration is far more fun that simply realising your going fast.  Hence the diesel being more fun.

From personal experience, a PD TDI chipped is far "more fun" that a chipped "1.8t"

for the amount a remap costs it's well worth doing and 1.8t's are fairly nippy with 200bhp

Stick an ABF in a Mk2 and it will be just as quick as a mapped 1.8t :lipsrsealed:

I also noticed a couple of rust bubbles at the top of the A pillar at the very top corner where the windscreen is. There doesn't seem to be paint chopped. What would be the issue there?

Remapped 150PD will rape a remapped 150 AGU easily, I found that out in a drag race against my mates bora and even at 120mpg I wasn't catching up  :lipsrsealed:

The petrols are very slow stock, I wanted to cry when I got mine, I was like this is hardly an improvement from a 1.4 8v polo, but the remap is how it should of come out of the factory, not the way it struggles as stock.

no way a mapped derv will be quicker, the 150pd maps to 190 with a good tune, agu best your looking 180 (without other mods) but the rev range means the 1.8t should have killed it. agu with k03s, 220bhp easy, much more fun.

also mapped 130pds have a better reputation

also, 120mpg, yes please

a bad repair in the past, mk4s arent known for rusting unless theres been damage that hasnt been repaired properly.

is it jazz blue? i notice its mostly this colour that has rust bubble issues

Enough of the diesel bashing or Ill be bashing the delete button
Oh and torque wins races, hence a mapped PD150 will out run a mapped K03 AGU and CTR's are my favourite prey

I'm with Steve, bhp is for willy waving and pub/forum brag rights

I've been out in Rhyso's 130 when he had it, pulled like a bloody train and physically pinned me to the seat. IMO if we would have had a proper race he would have pulled a good distance on me which I would never have been able to close

I have driven Rhyso's 130 and it was very rapid. As said if you shift it quick enough it will out run a mapped AGU.

Diesel don't slate it until you have tried it  :lipsrsealed:

No it's silver.
I was surprised to see no kind of sealing rubber strip at the top of the windscreen, it just ends, there's a 'channel' at the top, then straight onto the roof.

I have never been a fan of diesels but torque matters.

I might leave this one alone.  I'm just not getting the vibe from it and I'll be kicking myself when I'm routinely getting low 20's to the gallon wishing I'd got a TD.
