Title: What is my car??
Post by: 9thwonder on 07 March 2012, 13:54
Just wanted to know if it was the 139 bhp engine or the 129bhp.

I am led to believe that it is something to do with the fuel injection?? K - Jet or not?

Can any one give me an answer?

Thanks

Standard 16V By the looks of it...

All 16V are K Jets!

I thought that some of the later ones had different injectors...ie not the Bosch ones?

The other one i read of is VW's own i think which brought the bhp down by about 10

Maybe im wrong but there is defo a 129bhp engine and a 139bhp engine as standard.

Golf GTI & GTI 16v

1990-1992 Volkswagen GTI 3-door (US)
The successful Golf GTI (or, in the USA, simply "GTI") was continued with the Mk2 as a sporty 3- or 5-door hatchback. Like late Mk1 GTIs, it featured a fuel-injected 1.8 litre four developing 112 PS (82 kW; 110 hp). In 1986 (1987 for North America) a Golf GTI 16V was introduced; here the 1.8 litre engine put out 139 PS (102 kW; 137 hp) (or 129 PS (95 kW; 127 hp) for the catalyst version) and the model was marked by discreet red and black "16v" badges front and rear. US/Canadian GTIs were later equipped with 2.0 16 valve-engines, available in the Passat and Corrado outside North America. In 1990, like the Golf, the GTI was given a facelift, and the "Big Bumper" became standard on all GTIs. This was maintained through the rest of the Mk2 model era. In 1990 the GTi G60 was also introduced featuring the 8v 1.8 with a G60 supercharger this version is not to be confused with the very rare G60 Limited (see below).

wikipedia

So i guess if uve got a cat on your car its going to be the slower version and if not then you will have the 139bhp version.

I wont be able to tell anyway as mine has a full stainless system on it now.

Thanks guys.

It should be around 135BHP I'll be surprised if it would hit 140
Go take it on a roling road and see what you get out of it its about £50 per hour to test it but I would make sure the car is spot on before reving the nuts off it!
The other early K jet has a diiferent air pipe i.e the dome with different squares on it thats a 130BHP if that?

This applies to later 8v's

Early 8vs are Mechanical/K-Jet.  Later 8v's were digi with a MAF and ECU etc.

All 16v mk2's are like yours and if there are mk2's with digi then the engine has come from a mk3.

Edit: Your's is/was 137bhp. ish  (as it's 139PS)

All Valvers were K-jet as far as I know until the mk3.  All MK3s were digi.

Some 2.0 16v Corrados where KEJet, 9a engines IIRC

But there was never KE Jet fitted to UK market 16v motors.

Bear in mind that possibly someone's fitted a 2.0 motor into the OP's car.  You'll need to check the engine number.  A lot of things can have happened to these cars in their life times!
