what can be done to eliminate 2nd gear crunching when cold? on 16v.
(sorry if asked before)
-
I had the same problem on a mk1 2nd gear crunch all the time
I put fresh gearbox oil and a tube of forte gearbox/diff treatment in and it was 100% better
-
Ok thanks think i'l start there then thanks
-
use search function plenty of info there
-
Syncro on second gear is tired, as above change the gearbox oil for good quality stuff and if that doesnt cure it use double clutch stop the crunch

sorry such a slow response got sidetracked on youtube! how much oil do I put in the gearbox?
-
If its a 1990 gear box with the car level you fill until it just runs out of the filler. On the early boxes the filler hole was lower and you need to remove the speedo cable and add some extra through there. About 0.5 litres. Be careful removing the cable.

Thanks for the advice doing it this week

Woth checking the selector rods!
You might get lucky just changing some of the worn out plastic joints in the selectors unit
They are cheap plus a weighted rod might help make selection smoother if you dont have one in there already?

+1
Worn linkage can make gear changes terrible.
I made new bushes out of Bronze and bought a kit from TSR (i think) which replaced the plastic UJ's with metal ones.
It is one of the best upgrades you can do to a Mk2
If that or the oil change does not help or cure your problem then its a box rebuild

is the linkage easy to replace without removing to many parts?

Also a helpful link. I got some of the Teflon bushes for my linkage.

Its fairly easy just a little frustrating at times.

Thanks for some very good advice, alot to think about this week gonna try oil replacement first with a treatment(just a soon as me 17 drain bolt remover arrives) then if no better on to the linkage. the joys of owning a 22year old car. What fun getting greasy again (lol)

Just noticed some gearboxes have a weight mine doesn't what does this do and do I need one?
-
its to improve the 'feel'. Ive just fitted one, the difference is marginal, but selection is easier and a tad more positive. Could just be the placebo effect though
-
does anyone know why the wern't fitted standard

It was only invented for the cable shift MK3 gearbox.
-
thanks for that.MK3 that explains why there is so many on ebay
-
Its invented for rod change, not cable change. It was something vw did on the mk3 020 boxes. it noticeable for the 1st 5 seconds then you're used to it after that really.
