Hi all,
I have just brought my first Mk2 GTI 16v which i pic up this sat
The car is standard apart from coilovers
Not quite sure how to insert pics of the car?? :undecided: HelP!
I want to keep the car looking as standard as possible but i want to fit some wide wheels with stretched tyres and lower it.
The car already has coilovers fitted and is lowered 20mm but can go to 40mm.
I have not decided on wheels yet but i am looking at BBS RS, Schmidt TH Lines or something different to those and go for steels...
The car currently rubbs a small amout when on full lock at the front so i am assuming that it will rub even more when it has the new wider wheels on it and is lowered?
What i am asking is what do i need to achieve the euro look? ie spacers or rolled arches or something?
Let me know if you need any more info and i will try and provide.
I am totally new to all this so any help or a point in the right direction would be great.
Thanks

Hi and welcome. Im gunba say it as im sure a lot more people will also, use the search button. Theres a guide on posting pics which is pritty easy to use. As for getting the look your after, there is years of knowledge and advise on this site. Have a look around and you probably find everything our after. :afro:

Forget the coilovers and fancy wheels. Fit standard suspension, BBS RA's with 185-55-15 tyres. Job done.

Why mess with it when it's perfect.
All I would do is find some rubber mats, hide the tax disk lower in the screen and find the OEM stereo.
The hard work has been done. Spend the money on detailing products!
-
I concur with Mr Blue.
-
where would i find genuine floor mats for it and the original stereo?
Thanks

A nice leather handbrake from a G60 would look good in that interior! They cost about £80-£100 from VAG I think its better than the plastic I call it enhancement!
Engine pics? its it as clean??????

i dont want to ruin her...thats why i looked for one that was as cean as she is with all original parts on her still. just missing the stereo...
Even got the electric recaros fitted from factory as well
everything in perfect working order...so far that is lol
must admit it is fun looking for stuff, i seem to be addicted at the mo

:All I would do is find some rubber mats,
Why? When you could have OEM carpet mats?
-
i wasnt aware that they were OEM mats.
I want to change the exhaust for the original as well it has a different system on it at the mo...its nothing stupid and looks fairly standard but would i be better off changing it for a new one?
-
Ohh thats been loved by someone!
New braided fuel lines
New ISV
New dizzy + leads
I would get some brake cleaner or metal polish and give the manifold a wipe.
New expansion tank
New hard plastic Scuttle pannel with a hard ECU cover aswell!
Stop any rust from spreading anywhere on the legs and bulk head.
-

Just ditched my carpet ones for rubber but yes you have a point. Less than £30 for OEM ones.
Rubber ones fit well with that year.
-
i wasnt aware that they were OEM mats.
Yours aren't. I was statting that you could get OEM carpet ones rather than rubber ones though.
-
the guy i brought it from said that he has built it from the ground up...new oem everything.
And only 72300 miles from new no engine rebuild or anything silly like that, never been welded absolutly no rust. He even sourced 4 new perelli tyres that it came out of the factory on..P3000's i think?
I feel lucky to have found it and im only going to keep it in that condition and yes i am going to clean the manifold a clean this weekend
-
As for rear box, twin custom stainless or OEM which ever suits your budget!
-

Ahh i see i thought you meant mine were
I didnt think they were. I want to get all OEM stuff for it but its knowing what is and what isnt lol
knowing my luck i would probably buy mats that say they are OEM when there not really.
-
was thinking twin custom stainless to match the look of the original i think i will be spending my money on this one lol i dont want to do things by half.
Is there anything else that you would recomend that i get ?
-
Well servicable items that get left off are the petrol filter at the back in the housing have fun with that one!
The gear box oil might need changing?
I would check any pipes/VAC pipes for cracks and chaffing and change out as a preventative measures!
But apart from those which he proberly did already if he was anal enough? The car is spot on!
I think the wiring loom has been uprated already can't tell from the picture, but they look in good condition!
Looks like a new fan and shroud has been put on but low miles it could be original items?
The scuttle pannel definity get rid of the flimsy plastic one that breaks and becomes britttle over time.
A OEM hard plastic will cost you about £100 odd with the ECU cover next to it! Function stops water from collecting in the firewall!
just realised you live in bag shot I'm off Junc 6!

ok ill check out those bits, thanks.
I want to keep her in as mint as i can so i will do almost anything to keep her that way.
my friend is trying to get me to get these wheels for it but im not sure what they are and i dont really want anything else on it tbh...

As Clipper said she's been very well looked after.... Someone has fitted a new 5 slot grille, 3 out of the 4 spark plug leads have the pull out tools - rare to see them still fitted & the rear has the plastic cover rare again to find one in 1 pc too.
Just pick up where the last guy has left and don't change anything too much....
There are improvements you can fit which will improve handling and ride and still keep her looking OEM.... Eibach Springs & Anti Roll Bars, Boge Turbo Dampers and get rid of the coilovers, or upgrade to some nice (& Expensive) Coilovers... etc
And for god sake don't put those awful alloys on stick with your RA's... if you want new alloys look at BBS RZ, RM or RS.
Hard plastic scutle trays as Clipper suggested are always a good investment, far better than the early ones that crack when you look at them..

Big sunstrip with mandatory 'motorsport' lettering, m3 mirrors, 18" wheels, the blackest windows money can buy, anodised washer jets, wiper blades and arms, in fact neon lit chrome washer jets, chrome number plate surrounds, aluminium treadplate mats, neons in footwells, electronic dump valve, deep splitter, and biggest bolt on aerofoil spoiler you can find fast and furious style.. These crucial mods are what makes mk2's uber cool imo

That is one nice looking motor, please dont spoil all the hard work someone has done keeping that car in tip top condition,as everyone else has said, a few nice subtle bits would sort her out, all the best with it, you will enjoy looking for the bits you need and i can assure you, you don't find things as quickly as you would like, but thats the fun bit
All the best
-
thanks for all the comments, it certainly has made me think that i don't want to mess with the car and if i did change the wheels i would just get another set of bbs of some sort. I'm looking forward to being a proud Mk2 owner...happy days!!
