Since most posts on here are people with problems (me included) with their Mk2 or people asking for advice about the car I thought I'd just post a comment about how bloody fantastic my Mk2 is. Other than the occasional stall first thing of a morning it's running great, the new, standard suspension makes it a pleasure to drive. I've just driven it home after 5 a side, chucked it round some corners and roundabouts. It is genuinely fantastic and I walked in the house with a big smile on my face. Without doubt, I would sell my Mk6 (fantastic as that is in its own way) before the Mk2. I just felt the urge to wax lyrical about the Mk2.
We had a post on the Mk6 section about the little things that annoy you about that car. The thread went on for ages. I can't think of anything on this car that annoys me - I just get in it and love every minute of it.
Time for a whisky now ........

I know what you mean Andy.
I got mine out from under it's cover in the garage the other day. I'd forgotten to disconnet the battery before putting it away in the begining of November, but needn't have worried. It fired first time, and not a hint of tappety rattle either.
It was a very enjoyable drive. Just like stepping back to 1990. Perfect.
As you're on the whiskey. I might just join you. Glenmorangie fro me.
-
I know what you mean....
I use mine as a daily... and I've owned cars like Audi S2's, S4 Cab, RS6 Avant, Focus ST, Focus RS, Range Rovers etc etc.... And still come back to my MK2's & I wouldn't swap mine for any of the cars I've owned before...
I can't think of one niggle with my car - well there is one but thats about to be fixed shortly!!
-
A Balvenie 12 year old Double Wood for me and it's going down really well too.
I thought I'd bought a cracker in November and, to be fair it needed some work doing on it, but I am really excited about the upcoming nicer weather and the shows. Without question, my best purchase of recent times (and that includes the 8v I had which was also faultless in the 2 years nearly I had it).

You not joining us for a drink Ken?

And that's why the Mk2 is the best GTI.
I wonder if the Mk6 section has seen this post.
-
I've always wanted one since I was a youngun and my grandad had one. I was a little worried and nervous about the test drive on the one I bought. I've heard people say not to drive your childhood icon incase they are a disappointment but with less than half the power of my daily, my 8v gti test drive was still amazing and I had to have it!
Also got the admit there is only a couple of tiny things wrong with it but on the while it's still like new!
Great thread this!

Ive got one of each, and would still rather drive the Mk2, cant wait to get it out again

I agree, I've wanted one for years and finally got one, it needs loads done to it but it's still brilliant. Best car I've ever had :D

I Had My Quota last night & I'm not a Whisky man despite being Scottish!!

When I bought my valver from Newport a few years ago, I pulled into McDonalds in Newport to check it over - and eat - and a random good looking distinguished chap, beard and all, in fact a lot like Thom, walked across a massive car park just to look at the Golf and say:
"I used to have one of those. Best car I ever had. Fantastic."
After owning many new cars, I have to agree.
-
I've said before I get loads of people commenting on mine. Just random people saying "nice car" and such like.
I also get a bit nostalgic cos my very first date with the wife was in a 1.6 Mk2 Driver that her dad had at the time. For some reason I can't really remember I didn't like Golfs at the time (I think I thought they were basic) but now when she drives me to the pub in the valver, like she did 20 years ago, it feels strangely ironic how we've come full circle. And the year of our first date (1991) was the year my valver was born so it was clearly meant to be!!!!
Sorry, it must be the whisky talking now.......

Why thank you J

I wonder if Mk3 owners get the same attention?

Bout Thoms age, or Thoms age
Thom
He was really old with a beard. :undecided:

Umm. No no I don't lol, that's why I'm putting my mk3 engine in the Jetta

My first car was a Mk2 Golf. 1.3 Mars Red 3 door, and for similar reasons to you - first girlfriend, first car etc - I still have it. It's not seen the light of day since 1999, but one day...

So did I
Thom
-
mk1 - cool but not practical
mk2 - cool and practical
mk3 - nothing going for them even when people spend ££££'s on them at shows. It's a mk3!
mk4 - same as mk3
mk5 - Decent family hatch but has no enthusiasm.
mk6 can't comment yet but guessing it’s like the mk5.
Thom - Boyd Foose of the UK.

Gotta admit, i sold my X5 and the Porsche, Replaced them for the valver and a Saab ,but the feeling you get when your in the MK2 is one that is really hard to describe, people admire them more than any car i have ever owned, as people say on hear, i have had woman at school saying i used to love them when i was in my 20's, people just love to see them about still..... enjoy them
-
my 8v makes me smile everytime i drive it and i don't begrudge a penny i've spent on her... love how everyone looks as you drive by and the comments you get
will never forget the drive home after picking her up, after just 5 miles the crappy plastic linkage joint cracked and i drove the 120 miles home with the linkage held together with a few elastic bands and only able to get 4 gears... however i had a smile the whole journey!
-
That's another reason I love it. Even a mechanical idiot like me can work on it.
-

Now here's an interesting thing and I'll get murdered for saying this, but what the hell - it's just based on my experience and it's about the driving, not the looking.
If you have a relatively early and basic MK3, like my sh*t-shaped utility motoring item, then it's relatively close to the Golf2, because it doesn't weigh a lot more than the late Golf2 GTIs - it's not got the electric windows or any of that nice (read heavy) stuff, but it means it doesn't have the lard that most Golf3 GTIs have (or the late Golf2s). What it needs is better damping (probably replacing the 170k probably-still-original dampers with Golf2 GTI OEM items - or better some Bilsteins - might sort that). I might do a weight-saving drive on it later in the year and see how many kilos of sound deadening and other clutter I can pull out of it.
It still looks turd, but I'd be interested in comparing it back to back with a late Golf2 8V cross country. It does make me smirk when I'm being unkind to it.
But then this is a thread for those who have kept their cars relatively standard and it's about the complete package and under no circumstances will I suggest a Golf3 TDI is ever anywhere in the same continent as an ownership proposition vs what you guys have.
This does, however mean I don't feel obliged to clean it, or look after it cosmetically in any way at all though and for utility motoring, for me that is a big draw.
Oh and every time I get in my Syncro and boot it I'm reminded about just how big a grin it's possible to wear.

Yup.

Adding to the positive ness , mines been off the road since September, started today first time ticking over nicely, been into classic cars for years, the mk2 doesn't look a classic but it makes you smile and drives really well..... Why does it make you feel good, could it be the glue evaporating on the headlining???
-
the mk2 doesn't look a classic
WTF... Linch Mob Popping Round Your's Tonight!!
Not A Classic - It's a Total Classic Just Like an UR Quattro or a UR M3, Gullwing SL...
Wash You're mouth out and buy a MK3..... :lipsrsealed:

Oh guys youve put me in a pickle now... Im selling my 16valver but was thinking of getting an 8valve as a daily, but that would mean selling my super reliable and economic mk5 GT TDI. Honest question... would that be a good idea? Fun factor aside (because i KNOW the mk2 wins everytime for fun) would it still be worth it in terms of reliability and cost? Because im out of work at the moment and dont want to have to keep spending, but i do love the mk2??

IMO Yes it makes sense to me - I use my MK2 8V as a daily and I've never had such a cheap car to have.... Just make sure you buy a good one...
In 3 years of owning it all I've had to spend is 3 lots of services @ £125 a year and a set of Disks, Pads, Battery & a Clutch but I knew it needed one when I bought it...
A six month service on my RS6 cost more than I've spent in 3 years...
-
Owned mine for three months, only driven it the first week I bought it and it's still broken..
I've loved every minute working on it and that week of driving it was a ridiculous amount of fun. So desperate to get it back on the road for the summer.
-
Well i service my cars myself, im not bad at DIY mechanics (servicing, brakes, etc) so that wouldnt cost me labour. Just things like clutches, fuel mixture settings and those things i wouldnt want to do myself. I just dont want to get one and end up feeling like i couldt quite trust it, my mk5 id trust to live in but thats because i know the car and it hasnt got the age on it.
Are they good on petrol?
-
Are they good on petrol?
Depends on how you drive it... but in the main very good - I get 35mpg mixed and up to 40 on a run... Hammer it and you get 27.5!
-
How I'd love to own a MK2 again ...
Maybe I'll give my wife the Passat and get myself a MK2
-
I've had a few, they are like crack and just as difficult to give up.
You feckers with a Mk6 and a Mk2 are fatherless sons, mucho impressed with the Mk6.....
Would give a testy for another small bumper valver and GTD
-
Cheers Bush.
I spent 4 hours valeting both cars and I have to say they do look the dog's conkers. The Mk2 has come up like it's virtually brand new. Bloody marvelous.
The problem now is I'm paranoid about parking it. Been to Sainsbury's today in it and parked it about 14 miles from the door with at least 5 spaces either side of me so that I don't get some tosser in an MPV and 7 kids banging their door next to me!!!!!
