Without forgetting the 'young at heart' lot  I'm interested in knowing how much some of the ~25years pay for their modified Golfs and what companies you'd usually use?
I'm with Admiral at the minute and they're pretty piss poor. I've got a list of minor upgrades I want to do to my Golf at the minute (alloys, minor trim, tints, stereo etc) and a little worried about my premium spiking. I recently swapped my address with them and found my premium raised by £150 to a staggering £1,050 now (I'm 22)... It's only the 105 BHP Golf as well  It's not like it's a bloody GTI or even the 2.0 TDI...
It got me thinking, if I do make any 'significant' upgrades like a remap, how much I can expect it to rise? I know an insurer sponsors the forum - what do they consider as 'modifications'?
-
Brentacre, as many mods as i like aslong as they are declared (no price hike)
Thats a vr and im 24 paying just under a grand which is HALF what i paid last year
Ps there is an insurance section, this thread will probably get moved soon

im 20 pay 1000 on my mk4.
im with admiral and when i declaed coilovers and alloys they only increased it about £30
as for what do they class as a modification, anything that isnt on the car when it rolls out of the factory.
-
I'm 21, 2 years NCB, lowered mk2 golf (group 14) renewal price this year was £690 with admiral.

Wow that isn't bad. What did you upgrade the size from/to?

That's promising. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they think. Will they just ask for size or some specifics? It's of course entirely hypothetical...

Ouch! Funnily enough Kingsclere is where I just moved my address from

I'm 22, in the RAF, 3yrs NCB, 3 points, no previous claims, GTTDI, suspension/alloys/remap, mum and dad both on policy both with 3 points, opted for a voluntary excess of £250 I think, compulsory excess of £100 and I paid just over £800 with admiral.
Paid it all off on an interest free credit card :nerd: Yea I beat the insurance companies awful APR rates for paying monthly!
-
Ive got an 8v mk2 GTi, declared engine mods of cam and exhaust manifold. Limited milage, 6yrs noclaims, no accidents etc, im 26. Currently with Sky Insurance paying about £450.

I'm 21 (nearly 22), 4 years ncb, 4 years license, 6 points SP50, 1 claim (windscreen) £870 thru VW insurance on 12 plate MK6 GTI but they won't cover any modifications - which is a bit rubbish as I'm used to coilovers, bigger brakes, arbs etc on previous A3 black edition, but I suppose I can live without and save some money

Very nice deal there. Makes me regret not just forking out for my own policy when I passed my test. I'm half way through my first year on own policy. Hopefully they'll finally drop it after this.
-
I'm 22 with 5 year ncb. 3 points. Only mods are alloys and exhaust system. Quite I got from first central was £590 third party fire and theft.
-
Stupid iPhones. That's for a mk4 gti aswell

More than anything you drive, what you do to the car, who you are. Location has the single biggest impact on your premium.
I've moved around a the country quite a bit, and it does work both ways. Admiral have always been reasonable with me.

I didnt get a no claims bonus due to a bump last year. Admiral are my cheapest quote so far with £3500 for this year.
-
I pay 2200 for mk4 gti t with privelege im 22 had licence 3 n half year but havnt got any ncb. No other insurance companies qouted me less than 3000 i think sky was over 4000
-
I think at your age, Admiral, Bell & Elephant (that group of companies) is your best bet on price for this sort of car. I have been with them since I was 22 and they have always been the best priced at around the same figures you are quoting. Everywhere else was generally asking for 3k, if they would insure you at all.
Now I am an old git pushing 30 they are taking the pi*ss as the price hasn't dropped much. I have recently found a quote for £600 and will be moving come renewal.
Apparently Admiral's customer service/claims support is crap mind, touch wood you never need it
Have a play with adding different combinations of your mrs/mum/dad as named drivers as this can knock the premium down _a lot_
**EDIT**
God I feel old reading this thread
-
Also I read your credit rating can have an impact on your premiums - theory is that those who have a poor credit rating where more likely by several factors to have an accident. Dunno how they work that out. As such, each time you get a quote you have a credit check and a "silent" footprint left on your credit file.
So might be worth seeing how your credit rating is too and making sure it's the best it can be?
