Title: OEM Quad Headlight Grill info
Post by: Jamtarts on 04 March 2012, 16:37
Hi,

I managed to pick up an OEM Quad Headlight grill, for my Mk 8v gti, to replace the debagded grill that was on the car when I bought it.  I eventually got round to fitting it today, however the second set of lights don't work, as far as I can see I've plugged the cables in properly.

I am not sure about the grill at all, and I wondered if anyone had any info on it, just in case I'm doing anything silly?  Is there a switch for them I should press, maybe it could be the fuse or the bulbs are damaged due to the postal transit?

I'm hoping it's something really simple and it's easy to sort, has anyone any ideas I could check before taking it to auto electrician?

thanks in advance :)

Have you tried ignition on and then switching on full beam?

Use a multimeter to continuity test the light loom to the lights.

Pics help.

Or check for 12v at the lights when you should have, ie when switched on full beam. If not, work your way back through wiring

Well about 9v standard at the most, unless he's upgraded his loom.

Doesn't matter, if there's power there then the bulbs are gone

Thanks guys, I'll try and have a go at them tomorrow, I don't have a multimetre and I've never used one before but I'll see if I can get my mate on the case and check it, I'm hoping it's something silly and I don't have to take it off again :)

I did get a couple of pics on the mobile, i'll try and post them just now, but I'm not sure if they'll help,

Thanks guys, I'll try and have a go at them tomorrow, I don't have a multimetre and I've never used one before

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004HSSJXG/ref=nosim/?

Learn. Always handy for fault finding.

Set it to the     ->+  symbol.

http://www.firehow.com/200912125665/how-to-use-a-digital-multimeter-to-test-continuity-of-a-circuit.html

The Amazon model doesn't have a buzzer to signal continuity, just watch the numbers on the display.

If it stays on 1 then no continuity = broken circuit.

If the numbers change - indicating resistance - then circuit is good.

Another one back into the OEM Fold!!!!

Whoop Whoop......

You are going to have to learn a whole new lot of skills owning a 20 year old car - at least you have joined the proper forum for getting good advice and not a verbal kicking for wanting to learn new stuff....

Multimeter is a very valuable tool when dealing with these old ladies... Nothing like getting wired in...

Especially when you've had Steve Wonder working on the wiring!!!!

Hehe, I do want to learn, I know nothing about mechanics and I'm just trying to pick it up as I go along.  I bought the Haynes Modifying Golf Guide as the lad who last had my car must have followed every page of it, I'm using that and the Haynes restoration manual to try and take it back to OEM, although I might keep a couple of wee mods on it :)

I'm very impressed with the forum, some brilliant cars on it, it's given me a lot to aim for, I just wish I had the money to do it :D

get yourself the basic Haynes manual.... Before you go any further..

I've just got the restoration manual but you need to know the BASICS before you tackle the bigger stuff and for that you need the normal one...

You can pick one up for peanuts... worth it's weight in Gold...

Anything else come and ask on here, after doing a search 1st of course....

This is worth bookmarking;http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=40.0

Nahhhh Waste of time I did one years ago and learnt very little... Yeah the basic's of every car are the same BUT when it comes to sorting out a running issue with a particular car then it's down to specialised knowledge...

I can strip an Interior, Exterior and a full loom from a mk2 in 3 days - but finding a mechanical fault when you don't really know what your doing can take days.... So I still take my car to a friend of mine who is a MK2 Mechanical Guru...

Some good points made here... After helping my dad fix some of his cars as a youngen my very first golf was my main teacher.  The best way to learn is to tackle each problem yourself first with guidance from others when required.  As said, first point of reference is the proper haynes book for a lot of things although even with the book it can sometimes be hard to make sense of it to an untrained eye.

The Haynes modifying books aren't that great to be honest and certainly no good for fault finding and maintenance.

that's a good shout, my uncle is pretty good with car mechanics, I might enlist his help and become his 'apprentice' hehe, I'll go over the haynes manual a few times and try and get the hang of it,

I really bought the modifying manual more for 'reverse engineering' as I reckon the lad who owned the car before me has done just about every mod in it to my car, I was hoping working the opposite way would make getting rid of his modifications :)

We're all a helpful bunch in the Mk2 section. Don't be afraid to ask what you may think is a silly question.

We've all been where you are with your first car/Golf.

Everyone will have an opinion on the MK2, but remember it's your car and you can do whatever you want with it.

You don't get scene points in here.

HTH.

Have you tried ignition on and then switching on full beam?

I tried this tonight (well I think I did anyway :) ) however still nothing there, I'm still waiting on the multimeter arriving so I'll have a go at the wiring probably at the weekend,

thanks for your help,

I know this may sound silly but have you checked the fuses under the dash? The back of the cover indicates which one is which and defo worth checking they are A) there B) not blown. Wee bit unlikely both fuses are blown but not impossible.

I take it full beam works on the outer headlights????

yeah, they seem fine, and the foglights work too,

I'm just not sure if the grill was damaged in transit (maybe bulbs or loose cables) or if it's the car's wiring, or indeed the fuses,

You have wired them up properly??

One wire goes to the Bulb and the other pushes onto the lamp casing under the rubber cap...

I'll need to check that, the wiring was already connected to them, I assumed they'd be ok, but I'll have a look at that as well, I just fitted the connectors on the car and the grill(I assume it was the correct connectors) together.  I'm now thinking I wonder if the guy who put the old grill maybe disconnected the wires when he fitted the old grill?

Simple.... The red probe into one slot.

The Black into the other and turn the dial to 0-24V= and read what it says......

One way will say 12 the other will say -12 (or there abouts)...

But Mind and have the blue full beam light on within the console....

These are driving lamps, not fog or side lights and only work on full beam...

It's a known fact that the little blue dash light actually helps you see the road ahead at night when there is no oncoming traffic.....  How bizarre.

My MK1 doesn't have one, mine is amber but has the same affect.

I'm not sure I quite like the chrome badge, I'm looking for a new shiny one, I looked at the black one but I don't like it as much, I'm on the look out for the OEM gti badge but they're a bit dear, it could be an aftermarket one for a while I think,

I never thought about the indicators, never noticed them before now.  I quite like my black side ones though I might keep them :)

If the side ones are marked up Hella they are quite rare items and you should keep them, I've been looking for a set of Hella clear ones for over 2 years...

You can pick up clear OEM bumper ones at good prices... I paid over £50.00 for mine when VW Classic re-did them...

Good condition GTI badges are expensive... I saw a used one in not so good condition sell for over £50...

yeah, I'm considering buying another grill just for the badge, although I've got my mate that works at Audi on the case to price them through their parts as well, but I reckon a wee cheap one might do just now :)

I'll check the side ones, I think they'll just be cheap ones though,

I can't wait to get the exhaust off it, I want the original twin pipe one on it, it's a big, huge Scorpion back box and silencer on it just now.  I think it looks bad.  I'm hoping I can just add a backbox but I think I'll need the silencer too :(  I don't know if I'd be able to sell the Scorpion when it comes off, it'd be good to put some money towards the original one.

the steering wheel and BBS alloys too, oh I could do with a lottery win at the week end :)
