The metal braided earthing strap that connects the body to the bonnet (top right of the bay as you look at it) has worn through and snapped on the Valver. Can I assume that its function is just stopping little static shocks when you touch the body or does it have a more serious function?
And, more importantly, where can I get a new one from?
Thanks as always for your replies everybody.

It seems to do more...
Replaced the wifes one and the rev counter started working properly!! (Wish it worked on the wife mind!!)

I think its to do with reducing radio interference from the engine bay. Most VW's will have this strap fitted, from memory my replacment was removed from a polo.
Whilst i was at the scrap yard also removed the battery straps to double up the ones on mine
-
Strap is there to suppress spurious RF signals from the Ignition system, and things like the wiper motor etc, without it you may get whining and buzzing noises through the speakers, even with the radio turned off!
VW possibly still have this part in stock, as the were fitted to much later cars also
Worth a call
Thom

Cheers Thom. Will give them a call tomorrow.

I don't think that the one from the bonnet to the engine bay needs to be anything special. Mine has a pvc covered wire of reasonable gauge with crimped connectors. Clearly home made and was on the car when I got it.

Been done many times without issue and always cheaper.

Lets not start fitting non OE parts! for the price of less than a round of drinks, slippery slope that should be avoided

Look if it's not an official VW MK2 earth strap then you may as well go and fit a Jap Wing to the back.
-
I think that's what some people think! I hope they've got oem stereo's, floor mats and spare keys cut all with vw part numbers on!

Actually, Yes..

Halfords do some nice shiny braided earth straps for about £4 FYI

Good hit.. however I bet it's not OEM though is it.

Love Thom's Ethos
Love everyones poor assness (me included!)
If I have the time, money and its in stock yes OEM can't beat a bit of OCDness
If I'm broke and can't be arsed and found some crap insulated strap lying on the garage floor looking sorry for itself and needs a bit of TLC strapping its on and forgotten! advocate
PS better to have sh*t on it, than not! :lipsrsealed:
-
Sometimes certain OEM parts are sh*t and custom parts make for a better job for the function. OEM headlight wiring for example, sh*t. Custom made upgraded loom = Awesome

So true my Raddo ones are far better than stock, my life is worth more than OCDness!

People tend to forget that these OEM parts were designed in the 1980's.
If a pattern part is better, I'll fit that.

Designed in the 80's!?.. Pah, and the rest, so many parts get carried over (especially electrical items) so a large number were probably designed in the 70s.

I agree with this up to a point....
If a genuine part has lasted 20 years, then I would prefer to fit that part again....
Problem with Pattern parts is that they "might" look better and may do just as good a job - BUT for how long...
Lets be honest "Some" pattern parts are just SH!T and cheapen the look of a nice MK2...
There are always improvements to be made over some OEM parts but some are truly awful....
But thats why place's like this are good as you can get decent feedback on what's what through other peoples experiences...

Agree to a point too.
But come on, we were talking about a piece of wire from the bonnet to the body.

I just expanded it to other parts....

 back at you!
When it comes to bigger parts or many mechanicals you are correct and I share the same view. But, there are certain things that can be improved on. Electrics being one of the main ones.

Pattern parts like body work is crap tin as I call it!
OEM electrical stuff sh!t = upgrade!
Engine parts OEM like gaskets and servicable parts
Funny thing companies like Mann make VAG parts VAG don't make them directly? Cross over parts I call them!
Some parts are hard to find OEM

You do know that VAG et al don't make everything that goes into their cars.
E.g. like the Fuel injection system in the MK2 16v is made by Bosch, lights by Hella etc..

Yes but for the sake of discussion OEM = recognised authorised other manufacturing allowed
Jon shame on you could trip me up better

Over the years, I have seen many cars ruined because of pattern parts, Theirs still plenty of great Mk2's out there well worth looking after, but, once someone decides to start using pattern items, then usually that starts putting that particular car into decline, even to the point that when that car gets moved on to a new owner, they are less inclined to properly look after that car... thats why the mint cars are mint, and the others are not!
We need to start preserving what cars are left!
Just my opinion

And it's a fine opinion.... but as I already said, all this fuss just because someone suggested an alternative to the bonnet earth strap.
-
TBF I have always gone to VAG myself for parts if a build or restoration needs expensive parts I've always gone secondhand VAG, but to put it into persepective any after market parts I have used has generally been poorer quality unless it was engineered items and not mass produced!
Things like air mass sensors and temperature controls just don't last?

Mint or Solid cars need preserving.... I totally agree...
BUT & This is a BIG BUT.... Due to the lack of Genuine parts available either from VW or Classic parts in Germany there is a need to break some crap cars so that those of us who want to make a "Mint" car can actually get the parts to do it...
I breaks my heart to do it at times - BUT that's why I buy rot boxes & non runners MK2's and do what I do...
My Mate is in the process of re-building (He's just had a full top notch respray in Hellios Blue done) a MK2 Syncro that he bought in Spain and it's a fantastic feeling seeing parts from scrappers being used to restore his new pride and joy.... Even he as a MK2 specialist finds it hard to understand why so many parts are now obsolete & since he did his last 16V MK2 how many parts have been dropped in recent months.....
-
^^^ try finding decent oem stuff for a mk1.
It is sad but I suppose to VW spare parts for these cars is chicken feed for profit.

I know what you mean - I read through your build thread and saw just how hard it was for you to find decent parts.
At least VW learnt from the mistakes with the MK1 about body rot!!
So hopefully MK2's should be around much longer & with more being left hopefully the demand for parts will keep VW churning them out - if not constantly at least every couple of years or so....
-
Well - I kicked something off there.
I would rather go OE but the strap was already there when I got the car.
Don't you just love this forum - I do!
-
You'll get that a lot in the Mk2 section.
It's because we care.
