How do I best attack this bloody stuff? Seems to be half under the rubber seal, and also around the "spare" wiper mount. The latter I can do, but do I need to get the screen out to really get at the rest?

to do a job worth doing, yeah you really need that screen out. carefull though as its a common place for mk 2's to rot and there may be alot more lurking there than you think! it may mean a trip to the body shop to get some welding done!

You need to spend £20 - £30 get the right tools for removing screen, like these http://www.drapertools.com/draper/templates/draper/details.asp?newrecordset=yes&classlevel=39
It can be an easy job, or it can be a right pain, 50/50 depends if its really bonded in well after a replacement screen. Rust probably caused from an incabable autowindscreen guy anyway.I've never seen my mate struggle (to much) with windscreens when spraying. Puting them back in is easy.
A bodyshop will be more than capable of removing it though. A few years ago my Mondeo ST200 had a replacement screen fitted by Auto windscreens at work for stone chip, I kid you not it took him 7 hours to remove & re-fit, I had glass everywhere (down back of dash, etc) and scratches on the bonnet because he never covered it. I very nearly smacked him and so did one or two lads at work, cos they liked that car.

Bugger. Might be a case of some careful work to remove surface stuff for the time being and then have a proper go at a later date. Not that confident about removing the screen- might head off to local scrappy and practice!

Have had a look around inside and behind dash and seems to be sound- nothing that a screwdriver would go through, or even bend. Looks as though it may be surface only at this stage. Fingers crossed......

Prise the screen rubber back a bit at a time with a plastic tool and pour some warmed waxoyl in allowing it to seep in. That should keep things at bay.

theres a bit in the latest VW Motoring mag about replacing a screen

Cheers, Dubby. Off to Smiths......

My screen surround is so f**cked that i've got water pissing in on both sides of the car- anyone make replacement panels, or is it a trip to the scrapyard to chop out a scuttle?
